Rear Diff options

As we all know, the LSD in the '90 is next to useless after about 50k.
I would love an air locker or other form of locker, but reading about the auto-lockers has put me off a bit, especially on a constant 4wd vehicle.
I was thinking about getting a decent LSD in the rear. Hopefully from a wreckers. Alternatively getting the current one refurbished, which may not last more than a year or two.
Is there any other vehicle that has the same sized diff and ratios in an LSD that's a relatively straight forward swap for the Prado rear? 70/80 series for example.
Am I wasting my time? and should just save up for a proper solution? The money for an air/pro-locker would take a very long time to scrape together and is not easily justifiable :cry:

just my opinion, save your money for an airlocker, a mate of mine reshimmed his 120 diff extra tight and it still wasnt mach better then std, so most toyota lsd are limited slip or lld that should be limited lock lol. cheers samo

My opinion: Waste of time. Either save up for air lockers, or spend the time/money on other traction and recovery aids.

But then again, I've never seen someone do a real life comparison between a good LSD and a worn one... who knows

Having now experienced a bit more with the Prado, I have to say the LSD isn't bad at all. I've had "traction issues" on several steep hill climbs, where 3-4 wheels were spinning and I was sliding backwards... the solution was simply less tire pressure and more speed! (smooth speed)

Mines done 150K and it's still good.

The LSD in mine was not too bad but the air locker made a MASSIVE difference off road - not a cheap mod but it sure is fun lifting wheels

You have to go Air lockers, if you want any traction in difficult situations, reasons being is -
1. Likelyhood of damage to vehicle is dramatically reduced.
2. As above, but for the tracks, (remember the tread lightly principle)
3. You get to drive more tracks as your not stuck in the easier places
4. The Toyota LSD cannot be shimmed sucsessfully, as the LSD pack is made from a soft fibreous material (unlike the Nissan Patrol which is made of metal so this mod can be done)
That is just to name a few.
I went and got front and rear air lockers and it is so much fun when you can go further than the Nissans.
