    Hi Wazza,
The transfer case is at the back of the transmission. You will see the Propeller shafts for both the front and rear axles connected to the transfer case.

Is there oil actually dripping, or can you just see blackish oily bits around the shaft seals?

I have a similar problem. After returning from Central Australia I have a very slow leak somewhere in the transfer case. I have not been able to track it down so far. It is only leaking about 50 mls every few weeks, although in the past couple of weeks has not appeared to leak at all (even though level is still okay).

          Re: oil leaks at gearbox/transfer

Welcome to one of the single most annoying maintenance issues for the 90 series Prado, the damned transfer case seals.

Mine have been replaced, not including the next set to be fitted on Monday, 4 times. I cannot for the life of me work out why. Maybe there is too much stress put on the drive train, dunno. I did tow a caravan for a few years, perhaps that contributed to it. Any ideas?

But one piece of advice if you need them replaced then it must be both the internal and external seals. It takes longer and is obviously more expensive, but the gearbox and T case need to be seperated anyway. If you only do the external then you will be right back a few weeks later getting it all done again.

              Crooza,

I have had the car since new and it has done just over 205,000 km. First time they found it was at a service when the car was around 6 months old just after driving from Perth to Darwin. Toyota have never indicated that the T case or box are misaligned or damaged. I've looked as well and it is fine apart from the oil.

I keep asking Toyota why it keeps happening and they have no idea. Might have to get a second opinion.

The replacement of all seals seemed to fix the problem the best. The last replacement was sometime in 2007.

                Re: oil leaks at gearbox/transfer

maybe there is to much weight in the transfer case for the mounting bolts to the transmission to take alone and the movement makes them prown to leaking. Any way i havent got around to sorting mine out yet I plane on doing it myself just brought a workshop manual as I have mechanical experience just not on transfer cases

                  Re: oil leaks at gearbox/transfer

Our leak was the seal to the front drive shaft. Cost of part was about $25 and labour not too bad.

                    Re: oil leaks at gearbox/transfer

Make that two for front output shaft of the transfer case, the guy at my local toyota parts seemed pretty familiar with the part, so make what you will of that..

The front output shaft faces forwards, obviously, and sits quite low, cops quite a bit of crap flicking up from the front tyres once the grit gets in between the stationary rubber seal and the moving steel shaft the show is over quite quickly. If you don't get the crap in ther in the first place they probably do last 300+kms....

When I replaced mine I was advised to inspect the driveshaft as if any grit has held moisture in there the shaft may be slightly corroded which will comprimise the quality of the sealing surface. If this is severe the driveshaft once cleaned up will be a slightly smaller diameter than original so the tolerance between it and the seal is now greater, more space for oil to escape. I was also told that it is a good idea to put a bit of lube (trans oil or a small amount of grease) on the seal as it relies upon the oil in the transfer case to lubricate it and if it is installed "dry" it is possible to burn, melt or wear the seal significantly when the vehicle is first driven after it being installed....

Did mine a while ago now, no oil dripping yet. I did write up a little, not great, thread on replacing it somewhere here

                      Re: oil leaks at gearbox/transfer

is there ment to be oil between the gearbox and transfer case or is it normaly dry in there ,I take it there would be an output shaft seal on the gearbox and another seal on the transfer case. Does the gearbox aboutput shaft slide inside the transfer case on a splined shaft or something ?

                        Re: oil leaks at gearbox/transfer

                        Hey Wazza,

The seal K & M McF and I are talking about is between the transfer case and the front output shaft which is the lowest rear most gear housing, if you have signs of oil up higher i.e. between the gearbox and transfer case then this seal probably isn;t the suspect as it is quite low, unless it is being thrown up off the front drive shaft when it spins.

Best way to tell is to get down and dirty under the car and clean it all up!!!

I was under it this morning its not the seal you guys are on about. now i noticed there is 3 section the gearbox another section and then the transfer case , or is the two front sections all the gearbox ? btw I am not including the bell housing as one of the 3 sections

just wondering if anyone can point me in the best direction to find info on changing the output shaft seals on the transfer box and if it is easy enough to do it yourself.
