  • Manual to Auto transmission????

    Hi,

Just had a short trip at stockton beach and long story short I burnt the clutch out (it was already 208,000km old). i found it hard to get into second gear as the sand was so soft and when i did it lost power quickly.

As all of my driving so far has been sand and will most likely be in the future, i was thinking of an automatic transmission.
Is it possible to change the manual in my prado to an automatic, either from another prado or an aftermarket one?
Any guesses at a price? i.e. would it be worth it?

    My Prado is a '98 3.4L V6

    Thanks

    Re: Manual to Auto transmission????

I suppose it could be done. There would be a lot work involved. The T-Case should mate directly to the auto box and the torque converter housing should mate to the engine without too much trouble.

Possibly the biggest challenge would be the difference in length between the manual and auto boxes. From memory the 4wd shifter sits slightly further forward in the cabin on manual models. Presumably because the manual box is shorter than the auto box.

So you may also need to get the front and rear prop shafts from an auto model. And I'm not sure if there are going to be issues with the chassis cross member supporting the transmission.

I imagine this conversion would be easier than going auto to manual though.

    Cheers,
    Declan.

Yes it has a different cross member, and dont forget you need a different radiator, and different pedel box, alot of work is involved to change over from manual to auto, would be better off buying a different vehicle.

As well as the parts already mentioned since the Auto is controlled by the engine ECU you would need to change that as well or install a separate comp to run it.
So unless you could get all the parts from a wrecked Prado you would be better of improving your existing clutch or change vehicle.

Don't be too hasty I did auto to manual on my gq. Took it to a Nissan wreckers 1 week and $1500 later drove out manual. I will be converting my auto 90 to manual soon. I love swapping cogs myself auto puts you to sleep

The GQ POOOOOOTROL, does not compare to a Prado, the POOOOOOOTROL is old antiquated technology, I think it was first drawn in a cave, that is how old they are, and changing from auto to manual is easy, but it is a completely different story going from manual to auto, as what others and I have stated above.
