  • Diff ratio - confusing specs

I have recently bought a 98 model GXL v6 petrol, but I retained the diff centres from my previous hilux which contain ARB air lockers.
The hilux diffs have 4.1:1 ratio gears.
When I consulted my Gregory's repair manual to check the gear ratios in the Prado, I was surprised to read on page 190, that the front diff is listed as having a gear ratio of 4.100:1, "BUT", page 205 lists the rear diff has having 4.300:1 ratio????

Anybody know if the ratios differ front to back? I know that it could be possible, but would require differing gears within the transfer and this doesn't make sense in a mass produced vehicle.

Searches return the same info that all V6 trucks had 4.3:1 ratio. I'm confused.

    Hi beerdog,
Could be a possible typo in the Gregory's manual. The front and rear diffs are the same ratio.

The 3.4 V6 (not including the RV) has 4.300:1 front and rear.

4.100:1 is used by the RV which has smaller diameter tyres.

And to confuse you further, the Diesel 90's had 3.900:1

    Cheers,
    Declan.

Thanks Williade, that's what I was hoping to hear.

Now I just need to strip the lockers out of my old diffs and get them fitted to the prado centres.... then back to seeing what trouble I can get myself into.

      Cheers,
      Craig.

I also have the Gregorys manual and have been confused about the F/R diff ratios.
Williade, if the ratios are the same, that's fantastic news. BUT, how do you know?

While I don't have it written in black and white that it is the same front and rear, it is ridiculous to think that Toyota would have put different ratios front and rear. Your centre diff would getting trashed even driving in a straight line.

And the fact that Gregory's documents both the RV and GXL up, would explain the slight in discrepancy. It wouldn't be the first

If beerdog is going to have his diffs in pieces, we should get him to count the teeth on pinion and crown wheel for both and put an end to the speculation.

It's interesting that that the 2.7 RV has the same diff as the GXL but the RV6 has the taller 4.100:1 diff. My previous statement about which diffs are for which Prado was a bit over simplified.

The RV has different gear ratios in the manual gearbox....plus both the RV & RV6 have smaller diameter tyres than the others.

Easy way to tell if they haven't been mucked about with inside, On the extension tube on the drivers side of the front diff there is a white sticker about this will have either R16 or R17 on it, the R16 diff is 4.100 and the R17 is 4.300
I have a Euro version of the RV called a GL and it came with the 4.100 diffs. I have never seen the 3.900 diffs here on any 90 series and 99% here are diesel.
