I have a 95 jap import prado and I jump started it after the internal light was left on for two days, when jumped and started i took the leads off and left her to run and charge the battery and after an hour i switched her off and started her again no bother. The next day i went to start up but the engine will turn over but will not start. I was wondering have i blown a fuse or is there a fuse on the ECU circuit, and if so where is it located in the jeep. This is the 1KZ-TE 3000l diesel engine. I have searched for fuses but could only get the one box at the drivers footwell, Is there another fuse box that i need to look at.

Re: Electrical question?
Hi Ferg, and first up, as suggested, check your battery.
Next, if you had a flat battery, your need around 6 hours DRIVING, not just idling, to fully charge your battery, so there is every chance your problem is that your battery still needs a good charge and if you have a battery charge, try fully charging the battery overnight.
If you haven’t got a charger, try borrowing one, preferably a small one and let it take as long as needed to full charge the battery.
A low ( slow ) current charge is be very beneficial for a battery, particularly in your case where your battery was flattened

Re: Electrical question?
I use a 20 amp multi stage charger for charging my batteries.
They are around $200 from Supercheaps.

Re: Electrical question?
Hi Ferg. I would suggest that if you 1st waited and glowed the engine, and then the engine turned over but didn't fire, your problem is other than the battery. Run a volt meter from the glow plug bus bar to earth and check you have voltage on pre-start. If no voltage, there you have your culprit and into the electrics. You are going to have to charge the battery in any case so a good starting point. In the arguement of a dozy cell, it is pretty rare to have a lazy battery nowadays. They just generally give you one warning (if you are lucky) of a slow turnover one day and then open circuit and the dash lights go out on startup later on. (if you are really lucky, your handbrake may choose to advise you of the dozy start!) Good luck Boss.2005 100 Series Landcruiser. 4.2 T/D 5 speed auto. LTD c/w AHC/Leather etc.

Re: Electrical question?
Ferg 4x4 here, Thanks for the advice on the battery and i have charged it with a mains charger over two days, charging for three hours and letting rest for three hours and the battery is good now. The engine is turning freely and with no load and not smoking so i cheaked and the soliniod on the diesel pump is getting no volts when turning over, so for a test i gave it 12V direct and i could hear the soliniod clicking ( open and closed ) every time that i made and broke the circuit. As this soliniod is controling the revs of the engine only very small voltage should open this to let it start but nothing is comming. Someone said i might of damaged the ECU with the jump but surely there is a fuse to protect this? or maybe i cooked my goose! Thanks chat ya later.

Re: Electrical question?
Hi Ferg, as long as you had your ignition turn off while you connected the jumper leads from the doner vehicle, you will not have damaged the ECU by jump starting.
This does not rule out a faulty ECU but it’s fault would not have been caused by a correct carriedout jump start.

Re: Electrical question?
I’m not up on the operation of, or whether you can reset the ECU in a Toyota, so someone might like to give the CORRECT info here but on many vehicles, if you disconnect the battery for a few minutes, it can cause the ECU to reset, which Ferg if your fuel pump is effected in some way by an erroneous ECU operation, this may solve it.
There are a few vehicles where disconnecting both cranking battery leads and holding the leads together, shorting the leads, forces an ECU reset. I DO NOT know if this is the case with Toyota ECUs and I do not suggest doing this unless someone more informed on the subject can comment.
Also before doing a FORCED reset, you must make sure if the vehicle is fitted with a dual battery system, that all other batteries have their negative terminal disconnected first.

Re: Electrical question?
Hi Ferg 4x4 here again.
Just wondering if anyone would have a link where I could get a maintaince manual or a wiring diagram for a 90 series with the 1KZ-TE 3.0 diesel engine. Tried alot of web
sites but since it is a japanese import the manuals are like hens teeth(impossible to find). My problem is electrical and rather than pulling the jeep apart to find the problem it might be best to have a general place to start.
Regards

Re: Electrical question?
Ferg 4x4 here just a note to warn folks of the danger of jumping from a doner jeep when your battery is totally flat. While jumping my prado I cooked the ECU which i didnt know existed. The jeep ran for two hours later and even started after it had been stopped but when it was tried the next day she would turn over but not start.....I left it with two differnt garages for four weeks and they drew a blank. I got in bad humour and took it home and done the checks on the sensors and they all pointed to the ecu being faulty. A friend of a friend said he new someone with a surf that had the same engine as mine and i chatted him and he give me a lend of his ecu and i fitted it, the jeep turned over twice and started. relief that i found the problem, now i have to find an Ecu to get the honky tonk as the kids call it back on the road. Valuable lessons have been learned the hard way but at least they are learned. The quick jump isnt always the quick answer. P.S thanks for the info on the wiring and the trouble shooting. Also the ECU for an Auto Surf with the 1KZ-TE 3.0D engine

Re: Electrical question?
The Surf/Hilux 1KZ lacks an intercooler AFAIK so has a lower power output. So I'm guessing the Prado 1KZ would have different ECU firmware.Originally posted by Ferg 4x4Also the ECU for an Auto Surf with the 1KZ-TE 3.0D engine

Re: Electrical question?
If your jump starting the easiest way not to kill an ECU is to disconnect the jumper leads from your rig before the other vehicle tries to start, or just buy a decent set of jumper leads with the spike protection.97 VX Grande, with front & rear air lockers, ARB Sahara winch bar with tigers 11 winch, 2" EFS lift, 265/75/16 Achilles Desert hawk XMT, and more.
