  • Dual battery set up

Hi everyone, i'm new to the site and to Prado's. Looking to get my 2000 model fitted with a dual battery system, so have been and talked to a few so called experts and am being told different things by everyone. Want to upsize my existing battery, plus add a second under the bonnet. Would love to know what other people have done and what works. Appreciate any feedback. Cheers

    Petrol or Diesel?

I've got a petrol, upgraded the main battery with a Pirahna Battery tray and accordingly bigger cranking battery.
In the process of fitting my dual battery tray which is again a Pirahna tray and will be controlled by a Projecta 150A dual battery system.

What different things have you been told by experts? Is it just relating to what management system to run?

I'd like to see a pic of how and where you have mounted your 2nd battery... I'm thinking of doing it as well but without moving the air filter back I don't see where it would fit. (petrol V6).

The Pirahna dual battery tray fits on the passenger side furthest away from the front of the car. You need to relocate the charcoal canister.

Thanks for the info mate. Yeah last guy i've spoken too has said he's done the conversion by moving the charcoal filter to the drivers side, but hadn't upgraded the main battery before. ARB told me it couldn't be done at all and to buy a thumper and TJM weren't sure. Had thought it would've been a fairly common conversion? Have also seen it done where the second battery is placed directly next too the main, doesn't give much room for decent sized batterys though.

Yeh I've seen that too. Would much prefer to run a bigger starter battery than have two small ones up front.
Seeing as I've installed the bigger battery up front it makes relocating the charcoal canister more fun. Haven't done it yet but have ideas of where it could go!
ARB will tell you it can't be done because they don't sell a dual battery tray to suit

if money is a prob id keep your existing battery and just get a decent deep cycle battery for the second... then if you really need to you can bridge them... i bridge mine for winching etc... then when its worn out replace it... if it aint broke dont replace it i reckon

On my old RV6 i fitted a tray similar to the piranha but was a Brown Davis tray that had the bits to relocate the cannister.
When fitting i rewired the the batteries so my starting battery was a oddessy battery mounted in the new tray and auxillary battery was fitted in the position of the original start battery but in a larger tray allowing a bigger battery

Hi ovrdrft. Plenty of room under bonnet of my 2000 diesel prado for 2 x N70's in parellel. Just went to wreckers and picked up plastic battery tub off same and they fit the lug holes on passenger side. Easy enough to make up a clamp as per drivers side. Used a piece of 3mm sheet steel with turned up edges to reinforce the battery base. Fatu. Cheers.

Yeah looks like what i want. Thanks for all the info. Pictures really help. Did you have to modify any of the aluminium lines that run near the charcoal filter? Has it made changing the plugs a headache?

                              Ovrdrft,

Depending on what specification your Prado is there is a couple of options where to fit the charcoal cannister.
If you don't have Cruise control and ABS you can fit the cannister on the r/h guard in front of the brake master cyl.
if you have Cruise then you need to get a bit inventive.
