  • Headlight upgrade for 90 series

I am not happy with the light output of the standard headlights on my 2002 90 series, does anyone have any advice on methods to improve this or even regarding any upgrade kits available. would like to hear from people who have done similar mods/upgrades, process, costs and outcomes. any info appreciated.

+1. The factory headlights are pretty bad compared to such a capable everything else. I was wondering if the headlights for the 01.02 models fitted to the earlier ones direct fit as they are reported to be better. The HID option sounds good but is illegal if you wish to follow all the rules. Yes you can get spotties but from bright to dark is a bad thing when you dip your lights.

The 96 to 2000's had proper glass head lights and the reflectors are glass too, they can handle a higher wattage bulb, unlike the later pollycarbonate one (due to the extra heat), however you need to look at upgrading the wires as your first port of call, there are kits out there that you can buy, alternitively you can get +50,+80, or +100 bulbs from autobarn, these give better light than std bulbs too, but work better again after the as said before wire upgrade.

I threw some narva's in mine i think they were, were about $60 and included a pair of park light bulbs as well. 100 times better than standard, and the high beam on them is great.

i was looking at 55w HIDs in 5000k but not sure if i want to go them as an option yet... The narvas might be the way to go... I drive everywhere iwth my high beams on and have never had anyone flash me - thats how bad they are!

I'd steer clear of the HID's simply due to legalities.
I upgraded just my globes to Narva +80's (or something like that). If you head into an Autobarn, Supecheap, Repco etc they'll have a whole selection and you'll easily be able to decide which ones suit your car. As g.t. said they'll be $50-$60 and make a decent difference.
Here's mine with one of the Narva globes (left hand side looking at the photo) to a standard globe

Hi Fellas. Got standard polycarbonate lamps on my 2000 KZJ95R and pretty ordinary. Thinking of swapping them out for glass units so I can go for higher wattage bulbs with relays. A good polish every 6 months or so improves them somewhat though. cheers.

I installed some Philips X-Treme Power bulbs, they claim to increase light by 80% and distance by 25 metres. They cost $88 in April 2010 but for a simple plug and play solution they were definately worth the money.

The following link is from Bursons Catalogue

                      http://www.invisionsales.com/lightin...light-upgrades

I would NOT recommend Phillips BLue vision 4000K as they worst than anything out there . for the time being i have instead replaced them with the inferior globes as they still work better than Phillips BLue vision 4000K .

I am still deciding between Xtreme vision or Diamond vision

Just remember, that if you get a whiter light or those blueish ones, you will actually have less light on a wet road.
The best thing to do is upgrade the wiring, you will have the extra light output, without the extra heat, which is good for the ones with polycarbonate lenses. Another thing to remember for those wanting higher wattage bulbs, is that the bulbs will blow more often, this is because of the extra heat and vibration, and the fillament degrading quicker.

Narva now have a Plus 100 H4 Globe meant to put 100% more light than standard globe, they also have a Blue Plus 90 globe 90% more light & 20% whiter light.
As Crooza said if you want a "whiter" light or a "blue" light you lose light output, Narva's own data states this.

As for the IPF Fatboys, imo for the money try the Narva's or Philips Extreme instead.

Awesome heaps of options here, cheers. This may sound silly (Athough the original question was about automotive) I am actually a lighting technician (theatre) And i have noticed a lot of suggestions toward NARVA lamps- IMO narva are not very good quality and blow much faster than likes of philips or osram globes (best quality).

Hey mastermanoj, I did the same thing putting in blue visions CRAP there is no beam just a soft wash of light useless!!!! Actually I think mine may be the diamond visions either way I wouldn't bother!!! Just this weekend I went and bought the one below these (80% brighter, forgot the name of them) for my falcon and they were a heap better. Blue Light= Crap light.

                              Kernal,

Blue Lights usually are associated with a bit of doof doof music as well

Narva tend to get mentioned in the automotive field a fair bit as they have a good range of automotive gear although i would agree Philips is a better product just not as common around the auto retailers.
