Not sure if I need a replacement aerial?

Took my '98 90 series to the mechanics, work required that the battery be disconnected. After getting the car back and having programmed the PIN back into the radio I find that the aerial only raises about 10cm and stops. When I turn the radio off the aerial fully retracts.

I'm going to be optimistic and assume that the mast isn't bent. Can anyone advise if they've come across this before? Is there anything that I can try before resorting to pulling everything apart and shelling out for a new aerial?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      ops:
Doh! Never mind my last post... the mechanic had set the aerial height using the height setting buttons next to the radio so that the height was minimised. ops:

(You can tell I've owned my new 2nd hand Prado for not very long!)

        Re: Electric Antenna Repair

theres some good info in this thread which has given me a headstart. and some confidence to have a look myself.

my problem is that the antenna wont automatically raise or lower. the motor grinds away when the ignition is on then stops after 20sec or so. i am guessing the cogs are out of place or broken. i can raise and lower the antenna by hand.

anyone know what is going on in there? thanks jd

Sounds like what happened to mine. It would keep trying to lower the antenna after the key was turned off. You will need to pull it all apart to remove the broken plastic drive strip. I wish I had taken a few photos.

            Re: Electric Antenna Repair

Thanks for the thread guys made the change over a breeze. All i did was undo the silver cap, pull out the old antenna and then followed as thread said. To finish the motor was put completely back together and then with the ignition on I fed the new arial through and then put everything back together. All in all about half an hour, however I will need to buy new clips.
            cheers

              Re: Electric Antenna Repair

Hi folks, great to now be a member of pradopoint - I am going to change out my broken antenna mast tomorrow and will post photos of my experience afterwards. I inherited it with my recently acquired 97' grande. Thanks to all the info above, it shouldn't be too difficult to do. Prices were AUD97.00 for mast and 10 x AUD 1.70 for the ten studs from the local stdealership. Door sag will be my next fix......

Firing up an old thread here. I have a 2001 90 series. My aerial is also cactus. To what extent, one of you may be able to help. I don't hear a motor running when I switch off the car. When I press the up an down buttons on the dash, I can hear a relay clicking on and off, but thats it. I can manually adjust the height of the aerial. I'm assuming that the motor has packed it in?

                  Cheers,

I had the same problem as Reidy.I have just replaced the whole power Antenna unit, after a quote from Toyota to supply only of $340,I surfed the net and found a new genuine one for $280 fitted it myself took about an hour the hardest part was getting up under the dash to remove the antenna plug from the radio and unclipping the cable from the cross member under the dash. its very satisfying to watch antenna go up & down now as it hasn't for about 2yrs.

                      Cheers Andrew:-D

OK, I've just ordered my 3rd mast off ebay

1st was fatigue and old age of the original
                        2nd was a car wash
3rd caught it on a tree reversing out of a car park...

On a brighter note... each time I've ordered it keeps getting cheaper
                        $40.95 delivered this time.
                        Cheers, Leon

                          Hi Snaga

Did you find that the Ebay masts are ok or junk?
Tossing up between an Ebay and Toyo part...

                          cheers

Worked perfectly fine... all three I broke two but both were my fault. Trees in the bush and trees in a car park where I didn't realise I was snagged.
                            Cheers, Leon

                              Hi Guys

I recently did what seems to be a common occurrence, and got my electric Aerial snagged and bent it up.

I followed some of the advice on this thread and with the help of a mate, we replaced the mast.

However, now when it goes up, it gets about 20 cm, then temporarily stops (the motor keeps going, and there is a grinding sound). After a second or two, it starts again. It does this maybe 2 or 3 times each time the aerial goes up.

The strange thing is, it goes down without any issues.

Did anyone come across this when they replaced their mast?

                              Regards,

                              Justin
