does anyone know if the stock wiring loom on the 90 's (2002) can handle higher wattage (say 100/140) H4 globes. Are the H/L lenses polycarbonate or glass??
I would say no . The wiring is very thin and the back of the headlights are plastic . The front may be glass but the extra heat may melt the back. I would not like to try it , the lights are expensive to replace. I have used the Phillips +50 H4 globes they are better than standard and have no problems so far
I did an upgrade on this myself adding in relays and the wiring from the battery to the higher wattage lights. Not being an auto electrician I am not entirely sure if this is the optimum solution but it gave me an under bonnet work light in the process so I am happy with that as well.
Essentailly I used one of the existing headlight feeds (LHS) to trigger my relays and the other side (RHS) I loaded with a stop/tail light to make the exsiting circuitry behave normally (thus my under bonnet work light). Then the relays switch power direclty from the battery to the headlights, this way I can run pretty much any wattage I want.
(Is there a way of adding pictures to ones post as it would make it far easier than to explain it...)
Reasoning for higher wattage??? Because I can... and the bulbs are cheap as chips.
Ahh yes HIDs would be just the ticket... Waiting for price to come down more just yet.. With this setup I don't need to mod to much to drop them in and I have already sorted out the funky wiring...
Am happy to send a pic and schmatic of how I did it for those who want to know... I found with the wiring that I needed to shall we say load the existing circuits for the highbeam indicator light to work properly in the instrument panel.

HID are well under the $200 mark now. (Hi Lo Sliders.)
Higher wattage in halogen can have unfortunate side effects.
Eg Melting the reflectors and lamp assemblies.
I was at Toyota the other day and there was one in the service dept with mishapen reflectors, and the staff were not warrantying it because they had fitted much higher wattage bulbs. :?
