  • drown starter motor 3rzfe

    Hey Guys

a couple of days ago I stuck the prado in a big hole I guess it it was in there for a good 5 mins or so till we snatched it out. I'm now having problems with the starter clicking and not cranking, it will eventually crank after a few goes so it's safe to assume it got a belly full of muddy water.
Is it likely to dry out on it's own or is there anything I can do to speed up the process short of taking it off the motor?

    Cheers
    Rob

Could be mud, or it could be rust forming inside the motor, but which ever it is, you will need to remove the starter motor, and pull it apart and clean it, you may need to replace the brushes it it too as they could now be damaged.

Drowned mine some time ago, not stuck in a hole, just spent lots of time in many holes, must of been on its way out. Had to rebuild, sparky said it was quite sludgy inside!

Mine done that after many water crossings, but I gave it a good clean internally, the contacts especially, and it came good. I'm sure there's a few threads about this already.

          Thanks Fellas
Seems to have righted itself, I'll pull it off next weekend and give it a good clean, fingers crossed hasn't done too much damage

          Cheers

Had the same problem withmy 120, apparently it has a clutch and the slipping is the clutch, mine did fix itself for about 4 months then came back, they ended up replacing the starter motor for $400.

              Hi Rob
Our 120 series had an intermittent fault after our 2010 Cape York trip.
Finally stopped starting one Monday morning recently and was the prompt I needed to remove the starter and strip it for a clean and re grease.
The V6 stater has a drain hole at the bottom to allow water to flow out, this area inside was quite sludgy.
The armature side was also dirty with black carbon and grease.
If you are keen for a bit of DIY, have a go!
I didn't say it would be easy.
              Cheers

that happened with my rig after a long time watching it some times could not start at first time, especially after raining for while or over night.

Finally, one day it could not start in my driveway even i tried may times.

Finally, just take off the starter solenoid, clean and grease all things inside. Costs no money but 3 hours total. Now just start as it must be at first 1-2 seconds.
