  • Caravan wiring issue.

Hi, i am trying to sort the wiring out on my old Windsor caravan, which has electric brakes. I have a tekonsha voyager brake controller, installed by previous owner. At the moment, when i connect teh caravan up, i dont get any indication on the brake controller that its working (ie the green light on teh controller). But with no trailer connected, when i test the socket with a small tester light, the green light comes on....

I also have some issues with the indicators, i was making sure all the lights worked, so put the hazards on. The left indicator worked, and the right one didnt. After about 10mintues as i was taking the cover off to check the bulb, they came on (i wasnt touching anything at this time) then they turned off after 3 blinks at which time the hazards stopped working entirely.

I have tested the earth at the plug end and it "seems" to work, but could anything else be causing this type of problem?

Should i be looking at replacing both the plug and socket?

Its a large 7pin round. Thanks for reading!

Geez Crash I know how annoying the old 7 pin plug can be! Hours can be lost on this one little plug...

Im certainly no expert but i'd be looking at your earthing on the car and the van - is either plug dirty?, the pins might not be contacting properly hence the on again off again issue.

    Good luck mate.

Well, i connected up to the old mans caravan, and it all seems to work fine on his, so it seemed the caravan wiring is shot. SO, i had a look underneath, and found that i have two wires running to each drum, being red and black, but they go into a green and blue wire into the brake drum. Now, i traced these wires up to the front of the van, and for some reason...they have been cut near where the wires from the trailer coupling go up into the body of the caravan.

Interesting to note that i have a set of red and black wires in addition to the trailer coupling, which has also been cut at the end. I initially thought that this was to charge a second battery in teh caravan, but there isnt a second battery at the moment, and these wires are cut at teh same place as well.

sooo, with my electric brakes, should i have some sort of controller in the caravan itself that i should be checking to see what wire is going to what? As i do have the blue electric brake wire coming into the caravan as well.....

Crash, I think we all hate trailer and caravan wiring! If it was me I think I'd put a new 12v harness in the van, certainly new wires from plug back to brakes and to earth from each brake. Re your blinkers if the blinker lights are 'festoon' type not bayonet they are prone to oxidising so remove each bulb, making them intermittent as you describe, so roughen up the connecting surfaces etc. Good luck...TonyW

          Gday Crash76

i would have to give a +1 on what "TonyW" has to say and replace old wiring with new as far as the trailer lighting/Brakes go!
