  • Prado won't start 3.4

    Hi all been on here a few times and thanks for the help. I have a 90 series 3.4 prado 2000 model. I parked it for a week and will not start. I was convinced it was the battery so I bought a new one because the last service I got the garage warned me. Anyway it would some times be temperamental to start, so turning off aircon or radio then no problem. And so I bought a battery put it in and it will not now at all. The ignition comes on lights on dashboard everything and I can hear the hum when trying, no clicking. It will not turn over Can anyone give me an idea of what's wrong with it? Thanks for the help.

    sounds like the starter motor too me. weird how when u put new battery in and it wouldnt turn at all.

    sounds like a loose connection or something and when you put new battery in it didnt turn at all.

      Sounds like strater motor, could be also starter pinion jamed on flywheel which I have seen happend. Maybe give the starter motor a bang with a hammer.

        Chap from the garage I service it at popped around after work to see if he can do anything and he thought the same. So that makes 3 starters in a year! And it's not in mud or water ever!

          Any kind of warranty on the starter that you purchased then? Or are they ex- wreckers?

            There is thank God, the dealer fixed it last time, ie Toyota and still with 12 months warranty. I also have a national car warranty on it too that covers. It's in the garage, where I get it serviced now, towed at 6:30am and walked to work lol. Not sure if Toyota will cover it if they don't fix it themselves or if National car warranty will if its in the 12 months warranty from Toyota. Anyone any experience of this? Ps I'm not a river crosser or playing in the mud for it to happen again.

              All new parts they tell me anyway. The second starter lasted 10 minutes. And first one 2 months.
              Can these be wired in wrong and cause them to burn out quickly? Or is it a case of scrapers passed as new parts? But the starters all looked new il give them that.

                What a pain, no the starter cant be wired in wrong. It would be hard to say whats wrong with it with out looking at it. Has all the main power cables been checked as well as the main earth to chassis and engine. Could also just be faulty parts. Is the starter getting very hot or it just stop working???

                  They now think its the relay in the starter that's attached to the gearbox ie the relay maybe stuck open and think its still in gear. Little bit pissed off now!

                        Could be a neutral starter switch or a neutral starter relay, that is if you have an auto. Havent checked wiring diagrams.

                          Well gentlemen, car back starter was plugged up full or water and grunge. Anyway, the garage where I brought it said no point in going near the original crowd to get them to cover it. I do not understand it! The car hasn't been through rivers or deep water and the motor is only meant to be 11 months old. ####ing pissed off, got charged enough for it and I'm annoyed. To quote Joe Pesci in lethal weapon, "they #### you in the drive through."

                          And I got charged enough for it!
