  • 95 Series Prado Sub Tank Problem

hi all after my great long weekend in the high country about 100km from home my prado decided to cut out... i found it had blown the ecu fuse. so i searched the engine bay for rubbed through wiring but found nothing! so moved on the sub tank and found that a wire from the fuel pump/gauge sender unit had melted but not only a small amount it has melted right up into the main LHS loom . i was lucky i just unpluged the sub tank wiring put a new fuse in and ran home on the main tank! so the question is has anyone else seen this problem before and if so was it reported to toyota? and should I report this to toyota, or is it not worth it... i will find out tomorrow if the fuel pump has shorted out inside thus causing this problem!

problem solved... well months ago now but thought i better update this. after having all the dash out and the whole LHS interier out the auto elec fould the problem. it was an earthing fault which caused the wire to cook!!! lucky it didnt catch on fire. anyway they fixed up the loom and added a few extra earth points. which solved the problem.
    its all good now!

Good to hear it got sorted

Would it be considered a generic earthing fault or did something come loose :?:

it maybe. its a bit weard it runs a single earth wire from the pump along the loom on the lhs floor then up into the main loom in the dash to about the centre of the dash where it goes into about 3 wires that go to earth.
they were sure if it go hot and melted through then earthed out on another circit as the wiring was quite damaged in some places. so they repaired the wiring and added a few extra earth points in the circuit. since then no dramers!

I had the same fault on my old 98 prado. It burnt the earth wire all the way back to the dash. I was lucky as even though it was 12 months out of warrenty the local toyota dealer fixed it for free. It appeared to be caused by overloading the rear 12 V outlet (fault in Engel) , there is only one earth running to the rear

              Faulty Sub Tank guage

Well I wonder if that's the problem that I am experiencing then. When my sub tank is full, I run it down, but the guage never gets under half. Problem with that is that I never know when the tank is low, and then I had the fun on the weekend of having the sub tank run out, the car basically stall at speed on dirt and after flicking the fuel tank switch, it took about another 15 minutes for the car to run properly again, and to have the yellow 'engine' light switch off on the dash. can anyone assist with this?

Id be checking the the gauge sender unit first, and don't make a habit of running it out of fuel it doesn't do the fuel system any good. The light would have come on due to the fuel system fault. if to do run it out of fuel again I think there is a hand primer under the bonnet use that. Your Prado manual should should explain how to prime the fuel system.
