    xaver
its very easy, carefuly leaver out the main dash, it is held in with 6 clips. then 4 screws will have the old head unit out.
Take the brakets off either side of the old head unit and screw them to the new unit, pop the dash back on, and it looks like a bought one.

When I replaced my factory unit with an Eclipse unit I bought a wiring harness off Alberts here in Perth. It plugged straight into the unit and the factory wiring, only cost a few dollars from memory.

thank you a lot guys i really mean that, so basically this wiring harness, i have been surfing the net and found this thing here http://www.cutratebazaar.com/sista02pio1603.html thats basically what u mean right, one end connects the existing cables and the other to the new pioneer head unit

now i just have to find it in a store near me up here in sydney (hills district) im going to drive past a view audio stores and see if they have anything

If i cant find it im guessing ill be using Micks guide

But either way, if i end up doing this myself i will most probably be making a tutorial, for the whole process so that in the future some1 wont have any trouble at all.

              thanks again

What tool do you use to get the process of removing the trim started? Are there any screws to deal with, like under the dash or the lighter box?

There are no srews, I just use a small flat blade screw driver and lever it out carefuly. Be carefull with the clips they tend to come off the dash and fall down inside and are hard to find.

I have a 2001 Prado VX, the dashboard face plate, which has to be removed to anble me to access the head unit is attached by two screws at the bottom, they are located on top of the ashtray housing, and they have been very difficult to remove, any ideas? I have the faux plasic wood dash trim by the way.

                    Thanks.

there could be 2 phillip head screws going up from the ashtray.
i just use a stubby phillips #2 and easy as.
but as for the wood looking fasia, they are the same.
yota has been trained well.
if you are that worried, or can't get it out, go and see an audio place.
nicely ask them to show you, and if they are nice people they may not charge you. you win

I just had another look and the 2 screws above the ash try dont need to come out to remove the facia.
Just pry it off with a flat screw driver, some of the clips are pretty tight. start at the bottom, that way any marks left on the dash are out of sight.
