  • alternator fail / best option and DIY

hello yesterday my prado VZJ95R showed me the battery / air flow / brake lights in the control dash
i find out the alternator is not charging, so what is the best way to go (i am in melbourne)

    my options
    1) a 250$ new alternator from ebay and install it myself, i think is not too pricey but might be crappy alternators
    2) rebuild mine, i dont know where though, and install it myself
    3) buy one from wreckers and install it myself.

    what do you reckon guys?
to finish does anyone know where can i find information to do this by myself, guides, videos, workshop manual, anything.

    thanks!

well nobody said a word, but i am going to tell you guys what did happen today.

after an extensive (maybe not that extensive) study of alternators and its problems i find out that a change of brushes is considerable cheaper than any other option, so i did it i bought a new brush holder for denso alternators, i installed it in the alternator, i reassembled everything, i started the car..... but the 3 ligths were there to tell me NO NO, that was a sad minute in my life

so looks like I will replace the alternator, anyways anybody know why didnt work? any comment? what else could be the fail on the alternator?

    any word would be appreciated

      Hi,
It could be that the regulator / Diode pack has failed. Not sure what it looks like as I haven't dismantled an alternator for some time.

      Cheers,
      Mal

Try the regulator and rectifier. Should be at the back of the alternator.

Happened to me out bush after going through a bog hole. Mate with a similar year jackaroo had a spare alternator

Swapped the brushes and diode pack out and it ran as good as new.

Bought a new one when I got back and gave him his spare parts back.

Where did you buy the diode pack and brushes from? Wouldnt mind making my old one a spare

Hey guys I bought a new alternator as I'm going to rebuild the old one and keep it as a spare. Is it a hard job? I have a diesel with two belts on the pulley
