Quite often it’s easier just to buy a new alternator, that way you’re good for another 200,000-250,000km. They’re cheap on EBay. And to put the mistruths to bed about how far you can drive until your battery dies when you’ve got a dead alternator. It all depends on the condition of your cranking battery, ie how new/old it is. My alternator died in my 90 series years ago and my battery went dead at Carnarvon Gorge. Luckily my battery was under 3 months old. I fully charged it the next morning via 200amp jumper cables hooked up to my friend’s car and let it charge for 1hr, then drove the 820km home in a single day with him following me in case we needed a recharge. We put the windows down and used no other electrics during the drive. The windows stayed down, stereo & aircon stayed off. So that puts a few myths to bed.

Had this exact same issue (filter, handbrake, and battery lamps on) yesterday evening but I stopped and restarted and all was fine - likewise this morning.
Anyway I have ordered some brushes and will fit them at the weekend. Much cheaper than a new alternator so worth a try plus if mine is the original one it's done 381,800km.

Just thought I'd post that the Toyota reconditioned alternators are only using the aluminium case and everything apart from that has been replaced EVERYTHING at about $295 from memory it compares with the after-market alternators. Also you don't need to send the old one back, that is only for Toyota dealers. I had to wait 2 days but for a genuine (so close to new) alternator a great deal. Ken.Ken

A couple of years ago, thought I'd buy new and was told that they were no longer available but the reco ones were with all new internals. From Toyota dealer trade price.Ken

Hi Everyone
I have the same issue - Same three lights came on intermittently on long drive home - several thousand Km - Difference was the alt was charging, batteries great. Got advice in transit that the alt was overcharging and it needed replacement. So I fitted a new Alt at home - all running smoothly.
BUT those same three lights are still on from the first start. I'll service the original as a spare.
Any ideas what the problem might be?
Cheers
Chris
