  • Wiring for trailer

Hi, just bought a wiring loom that was designed for a 4Runner in the US in the hope that it would fit my 2001 Prado VX, but NO, I should not be so lucky!!!!

Does anyone know where I can tap into the wires using the loom which I had just bought? I believe that I must use the converter so that I do not fry any circuits.

The underside of the car shows two female plugs which I am fairly certain are used to hook up a wiring harness, are these sold in Australia as a dealer part? The dealer here has absolutely nothing since lights for the trailers are not required by law, imaging that!

If anyone has the full details, please let me know when you have a chance.

    Cheers.

    trailer wiring

    Gday,
There is a trailer connection point in the left hand rear plastic panel where the jack lives.
My vehicle has been wired by using clips just in front of this connection.
This is probably not the best method but it seems to work satisfactually.
Hope this is of some help.

      Hi Wozza,

What did you use for testing the wires? Did it cause any problems for you? Does any of the Australian Outfitters provide a plug-in harness for the Toyota Prado? I tried my best to search the Internet without much success? Would you remember the colors of the wires and how they connected to the trailer harness?

      Cheers.

        Hi,
I didnt try to get a connector from Toyota, but I believe they are available. These are the colors as read from my Gregorys Service and repair manual.
Yellow wire - Left turn (no. 1 pin)
Black wire - Reverse (no. 2 pin) may not be required
White wire - Earth (no. 3 pin)
Green wire - Right turn ( no. 4 pin)
Blue wire - Electric Brakes (no.5 pin) for caravan
Red wire - Stop lights (no.6 pin)
Brown wire - Tail light (no.7 pin)

Do not the connect to the Black wire or Blue wire of your car unless you require these facilities.
I hope this will help ,if you dont have someone that can perhaps give you a hand then you might be better leaving it to an auto electrician!

Well, I am trying to connect to a five pin harness. Can I tap into the wires going into the rear lights? Will this cause any overload on the electrical system or burn any wires? I have basically given up hope on the wire harness I brought from the US, which was made for the 4Runner.

          Thanks.

            Gday,
Did you have trouble locating the plug behind jack?
I am not an auto electrician so I cant say its a good or bad thing to load up the wires going to rear lights, but in the past vehicles I think there has been no problem with this idea!

I have been too chicken to do it, therefore I am towing the trailer WITHOUT rear lights, I know it is stupid, but it is an electrical fire vs. someone behind me having an accident with a very large boat kind of decision Not happy, but I do not what to do here, especially with the quality of car mechanics and/or electricians in this part of the world. I guess I will make a desperate attempt to find someone at the docks tomorrow.

                Re: Wiring for trailer

Just went thru this exercise with my 1996 Prado. Installed towbar without fuss as all holes matched up. Only missing 2 bolts which I bought off a tow bar business. With the wiring though, I knew that there is a plug behind left rear lights panel but how to get wires there. Looked up Haynes repair manual which suggested drilling a hole which I was not keen on. So in the end what I did was to tap the wires in the bumper bar. After this I found an existing hole covered with a grommet leading to the space where the trailer plug was. So wished I had found that earlier as would have all connections in the panel as more weather proof that way. I'm not impressed with the Toyota trailer socket though as Toyota will only sell the whole harness. I only need the plug!! Was very tempted to simply cut all wires from Toyota plug and install a general one which will only cost $5 at any auto shop. Only need something that will take 5 wires. If I had to do it all over that will be what I do.

                  Re: Wiring for trailer

I had my tow bar installed for me but I remember he had trouble with the wiring... he ended up tapping into the sig lighter power and that seemed to do the trick.
Found this site the other week fixing my box trailer wiring... might be of some use.

Apologies for reviving an old thread - found the connector with the assistance of the above but can't quite work out what is meant by the existing hole covered by a grommet.

Does the trailer wiring usually run out the same grommet for the rear bumper lights? If not, any clues or even a photo?

                    Thanks

Woylie it's been a while since I had a 90 but if it is still the same arrangement there is a grommet on the floor of the jack compartment.

6 Pin Automotive PLug in the Jack

Does anyone know the ping outs for the 6 pin plug for the trailer connector at the back of the Prado 2003-2009 models. Located in the tyre jack compartment !
