  • Internittent 'no-start'

My '99 V6 Prado has an intermittent 'no-start' fault. It has a near new battery, and recently reconditioned starter motor. When it happens I hear an underdash relay click, and a low hum (power being applied somewhere?), so shift from Park to L and back, also try in Nuetral, and reoperate ignition. Also take key out and put back in if above fails. Some or all of these actions help. All accessory lights appear. Starts strongly otherwise, batt. terminals firm. Any thoughts.

you have a voltage drop going to battery solonoid.
get a relay fitted to starter.
    thats my thought.

Had a similar problem yesterday with mine where it would not kick over. Turn the key, no start but humming noise.

Turned out that I had a dirty battery terminal and that was all that was stopping the power getting through to start it. I hadn't cleaned mine in over 12mths.

This problem has been intermittent for a little while so it may be worth a shot to give it a quick clean.

I just had an intermittent no-start then a full time no friggin start in the middle of my holidays, all on a new vehicle. (120 series)

It turned out the key was at fault!! Something has gone wrong with the chip in the key head.

It sounds like a problem with the points. Have you been through any water lately?

The starter works by running a constant 12 volts to the starter. When the key is turned it pushes the solanod into the points making contact to the 12 volt line through the points thus starting the motor. If the points are coroted from being wet it causes intermttant starting problems. The points can be changed. The parts are cheap, but pulling the starter will cost 1+ hour of labor.

          I hope this helps.
