I was thinking more of what cutting power will do to my immobiliser as some people seem to have problems after changing battery. Your idea of plugging in a 12v gel cell into the cigarette lighter is a nice one. Will try that.
Just backing up the advice that is already been given..........the immobiliser system will not be affected.
However, if you have a self-learning automatic transmission, you might find that the shifting might be harder than before if you do not use a second battery to keep the memory alive or use the gel battery that fits into the cigarette lighter......
Also, if you have a radio that is coded....you may not be able to listen to your fave songs......unless you have the code.....so best to use the backup battery in the meantime.
Hi Fellas. You don't need much voltage to achieve what you want. I have seen it done with a gadget which plugged into a ciggy lighter - all it had in it was a 9 volt alkaline battery and a few electronic components.. It seemed to do the trick. Cheers.

Hi kenwahoo, I may not understand what your asking about but I take it you want to charge your cranking battery, possibly from a donor vehicle.
If this is the case, why do you need to disconnect the battery from your vehicle.
Even if you are using another vehicle to supply charge to your cranking battery, you can do so without the need of disconnecting the battery, just don’t turn your ignition on, and it is advisable to make sure the key is not in the ignition switch.
The other thing you need to check, is if your ECU has a shutdown cycle as many new vehicles do, and if it does, find out how long it is.
This shutdown cycle is usually no more than about 5 minutes max and if your vehicle has a shutdown cycle, wait sufficient time after turning your ignition off, then connect up the jumpers from the donor vehicle and charge away.
Note, some shutdown cycles require the doors to be locked, if this is the case, just leave your bonnet up, wait for the shutdown time to elapse and your done.

I think it's quite simple what he is asking. He wants to change over the battery in his vehicle while avoiding the need to go through the rest procedure. He is not asking about charging his battery.
I guess he simply wants to know if anyone has hooked up an alternative power supply to the vehicle while the crank battery is disconnected, removed and replaced with a new battery. His solution is to use jumper leads from another vehicle. I would be very careful of not shorting the positive to any metal surfaces.
Hi Fellas. Agree with taking a bit of care with the jumpers whilst changing batteries. I would pay good money to watch the s___t hit the fan if you got it wrong. Cheers.
