  • Flat battery

What should the starter battery be reading for a decent charge on a diesel? Mine was flat yesterday afternoon (around 10 volts  ) and wouldnt start again this morning. After getting it going using the auxillary, I drove to work and checked the charge while it was idling and the multimeter read 13.7 volts.

The battery is only 18 months old (so hopefully its still got some life left in it), but I did notice a bit of build up around the terminals on the weekend so cleaned it off and applied some vaseline. I'm now wondering if this may be the cause of my problems or is the alternator not putting out enough charge?

    Hi Rainman,

I'd take it to a battery place mate and have it checked. Coincidentally I had a dual battery system installed yesterday and the auto electrician was explaining that a 1/2 hour drive is more than enough to charge a battery right up.

I've had my original starting battery since new (2006) and never had a drama. From what I understand (I was reading a few back-issues of 4WD Action yesterday) deposits on your terminals is a sure sign that you have an unhealthy battery ops:

      Hi Rainman,

The Vaseline could be the problem. I Don't think it is very conductive and may have both stopped the charging and reduced the cranking voltage.

I would clean the terminals of all the vasceline ? with petrol then metho and reconnect. After a charge it could come right.

      Probably worth a try -

        Re: Flat battery

This is correct information. Various types of oils and petroleum products are often used in situations where both a lack of conductivity and resistance to condensation and or water invasion is desirable.

For a material to be conductive, it must have loose electrons capable of transferring to the next atom. This is called the conductive shell.
