  • 2000 90 Series Prado starting problem

Hey guys I’ve got a 90 series 3.4 2000 Prado which has been having some starting problems. I’ll some times go to unlock it with the key in the door and only the driver door will unlock, with the immobiliser and open door lights the only ones coming on. When I turn the keys the cars completely unresponsive with no lights coming on or anything. Sometimes it’ll bring the central light on only to stop again when attempting to turn the keys. Usually I’ll leave it for a few hours to a couple days and it’ll start again no problems but it’s been causing a few issues not having a reliable car.

Was wondering if any ones had similar issues or has any ideas what could be happening? Have tried replacing spark plugs etc. and when the previous owner took it to the mechanic to see if they could find faults they weren’t able to work it out.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Sounds odd - if the immobiliser light is on with the key in there then sounds like an immobiliser issue, however the light isn't on then the immobiliser has read. Does your immobiliser light go out if you insert (but don't turn) the key? If so then the issue isn't the immobiliser.

I'm not sure of the behaviour of the Prado 95 if the immobiliser isn't disabled, but most cars just disable cranking or disable the fuel pump. The ignition still works in that you see the lights on the dash etc. If it's not doing anything when you turn the key then maybe it could be the ignition switch or ignition fuses.

I have an electrical diagram if you want a copy.

Yeah sorry bad wording, it goes out once the key goes in. No lights come on at all when the keys are inserted. That diagram might be a good help if I could trouble you for it.

So sounds like the immobiliser is OK - given the lights come from many different sources and sensors I'd say the major culprits here are the ignition fuse or ignition switch. Looking at the diagram there is a direct path from the switch to the charge light to the alternator, so if that's not coming on then I'd start there.

        Will PM you a diagram.
