I was wondering what brand and size people are using as the space is very limited.

What are peoples thoughts on the optima blue top and yellow top for this application?

        Thanks

The front cradle was replaced to take the deep cycle battery. Allrounder MRV70L 105AH.

The cable on the left runs directly to the fridge in the cargo area. I'll take a pic where it is in the back when I get the car back (oh, and don't worry that the wing nuts loose... these shots were so I knew where to put everything after I took the deep cycle out to charge ops: )

Baintech Voltage Control Relay is mounted to the charcoal canisters previous mount.

The charcoal canister needed to be moved so we could get as big a deep cycle in as possible. It's mounted on the back of the fan guard.
What battery tray did you use for the smaller battery? What system are you using tto isolate your second battery? Has anyone evr used the TJM solution for this??

I had a look yesterday but couldn't find any markings/branding.
I'll ask my mechanic what he used next time I talk to him.

Re: 2nd Battery set up for V6 GXL

Sorry to continually drag up an older topic but..

I'm looking at doing this very shortly and was under the impression I had to fit a 48" TJM(from memory) battery tray which restricted my solutions to AGM Hybrid (or deep-cycle) batteries. (As far as I'm aware this still involves unbolting the Canister and re-bolting it to the tray)

Looking at these photos these batteries are much larger yes?
Anyone in WA keen for a catchup (In the new year) with a similar setup so we can compare?

                Any more information appreciated.

                Cheers,

Re: 2nd Battery set up for V6 GXL

I have just had mine set up like snaga's. pirhana battery tray, relocate the carbon canister. then put the starting battery in the second tray so I can fit a larger auxillary battery in the original battery position.
I used a bit of 3mm flat plate steel to make a tray for the auxillary battery.

I use a redarc isolator in mine.

So it sounds like the most popular solution..

Piranha battery tray - Relocate the Charcoal canister
Place the smaller cranker battery into this new try and re connect all car power back to this battery. Does this require any modification or do all of the cables reach?
Then place N70 battery in original location and use for everything else. Ala Engel, lights, stereo, uhf etc etc.

                          Moyley,

No, the original cables won't reach if you reposition the starter battery to a battery tray located where the charcoal canister is.
                          Two options:
1/- replace the main battery lead down to the starter .. bit of a pain if your install is the same as mine running through a plastic support/conduit mounted to the front of the sump.
                          or
2/- extend the main battery lead by about 150 mm (if memory is correct) joining all existing power leads together.

I personally have doubts about where snaga has his carbon canister mounted, the fan shroud is plastic and I doubt it would survive an extended run on some of our outback roads ... bloody corrugations !!!
If you DON'T have ABS/Traction control you can mount it on the drivers side in front of the brake master cylinder. Because I have ABS and Traction control I was not able to relocate my existing carbon canister to the drivers side so ... I sourced a smaller canister from another model and mounted it directly behind the air filter assembly. Then mounted the valve control off the existing cannister to the firewall next to the wiper motor and extended the hoses to the "new" canister.
It has been there now for about a year and survived the Cape York trip in september ok.

Leethal, you should have said something... I have no clue about mechanical stuff so I'm always open to peoples feedback/advise.
Have you got a pic of where you put yours?

                              Snaga,

Sorry for not responding sooner but been very busy (unfortunately)

Because of space limitations in the engine bay I used a cannister off another car, (a Mitsubishi if I remember correctly) and mounted it over between the air filter housing and the electrical box on the drivers side guard.

My concern with mounting on the fan shroud is that IF doing a trip out west or up north with all the corrugations the vibration might cause the cannister to "tear" the plastic shroud. Which might then foul the fan etc.

If your not doing any trips where there is lots of our fine aussie outback roads ... corrugations.. then it should be fine as I understand it has been.

When I get a chance I will take a pic of my install so you can understand my ramblings a bit better

Re: 2nd Battery set up for V6 GXL

I have an Optima Yellow Top though it hasn't been in an 4wd yet.

I am mounting it in the rear in a battery box with the audio stuff, being a sealed unit it's ok though I'll be venting the battery box externally anyway due to the audio. Another idea to think about if it's getting crowded under your bonnet?

                                Kind regards,

                                Rich
