  • 1999 Prado stereo replacment

    Hi All,

I just got my first Prado and must say where has it been all my life. I love it and the mrs may well never get to drive this car even though it was bought for her.

anyways to the point, The stereo in it is quite good however I would like to replace it with a bluetooth and MP3 capeable stereo as the standard one wont even play burnt CD's. My isue is that the standard one is quite large as you know and the head decks you buuy are skinny. rather then have a hole below the cd head unit I was wondering if anyone knew another way, is there some kind of shroud or cover to fill the gap .

    any advice is appreciated

    cheers Shane

If you go to any car stereo shop they should be able to supply you with a DIN kit that is basically a blank face that fills the gap around the new face and looks factory. DIN kits are made for most all dash mounted hardware (i have one for the UHF mount under the factory head unit).

I think places like Wow even have the DIN kits, I do recall talking to someone there when I was looking for a new head unit for the missus' car ... ended up fixing what she had so didn't end up buying one.

Hope that helps. Let us know how you get on.

Oh, and welcome to the fold! Enjoy your new ride!

Edit: Point to note, some DIN kits are vendor specific so make sure if you go down that road you get the right kit (i.e. Kenwood, Alpine etc)

Depending on what you want to do, you can also do what a lot of people on here have done (and I just finished last weekend) and replace the old double din unit with a new single DIN unit and a UHF in the other slot.

Pretty easy job really and ends up looking quite neat

I was in the same boat a while ago, ended up buying a VDO brand single DIN unit that had bluetooth, USB, MP3 and several other exciting acronyms ($325 from WOW). I filled lower void with the standard pocket thing from an old hilux, being a factory std thing it fitted perfectly and provided another handy storage area. Really happy with it, call comes in and it turns on and you can take call via the stereo, and you can play music (from iPhone) via bluetooth also.
