  • Starter motor water resistance?

I've done around 7 deep river crossings recently, which has taken it's toll on my startor motor. Water/moisture had caused corrosion on the soloniod contacts, resulting in a complete inability to start. A simple contact cleanup has got it back on the road (I removed the starter via the bottom, after removing the steering coupling).

An auto electrician told me to replace the entire starter (part=$650) because it shouldn't be leaking. What's your thoughts? Is a new starter much more resistant, or will I just end up with the same problem another 7 crossings later?

Another option I'm considering is a thorough cleanup, seal, and mods (breather?) to improve it's resistance.

    Touch wood!
After many a deep water crossing, I have never had a problem with the starter motor getting water in it, It would be wise to try to find where the water is getting in the starter and seal it up. If you cant find it then go down the road of replacing it with a new one (not second hand or rebuilt).

I did the same clean up job on my starter motor (Diesel) about 6-8 months ago following on from a PP excursion down south.
Since then the starter has never missed a beat. It actually starts better than it ever did before.
You will probably find the starter contacts were corroded from age and the water just finished the job.

I put a bit of water resistant grease in mine whilst reassembling.

      Search MUMSRIG's posts for a similar thread/writeup.

I personally wouldn't be rushing out for a new unit.

Thanks fellas. I'll keep this starter, do a thorough clean/grease/seal, and see how it goes.

$600 can buy some nice new headers
