  • LED Lights Resistor Load Equaliser

Having searched and researched I am still unable to find what I'm after so I am throwing this out to all you Auto-Sparky and Electronics types out in forum world ...

I have changed most of my globes (internal and external) over to LEDs, for both brightness and longevity. My issue, well it's not so much an issue as a curiosity, is the indicators.
As we know, when you swap out the standard globes for the LEDs, there is an issue with load. This means that when you indicate it looks like your rig is on crack (or if you are on crack it looks normal  ).
You can purchase load equalisers through places like Jaycar and Supercheap to install at each corner of the car ... but ... I don't want to :P I tow a trailer from time to time which has standard lights, when that is hitched up the load is equalised and the indicators function normally (slowly if you are on crack  ). This got me thinking, about the load not drugs! I wonder if a load equalising unit can be made to plug into the trailor light socket :?:

So here's my query all you gurus out there ... Has anyone toyed with the idea or even gone so far as making a load equaliser that will simply plug into the trailer light socket :?:

My thoughts were; buy a trailer socket adapter from Supercheap (those square to round plug types) and cut off the end that is not required. Then solder some form of ?resister? into the circuit. Then it would be a matter of sealing the wiring to protect it from water and damage (silastic, heat shrink ... someting). Also the unit would have to be relatively compact and as inconspicuous as possible.

    Over to y'all ...

UPDATE: So ... I have decided to plunge head first ino this. I have just ordered 2 x Load Resistors from Bright Light Auto (have dealt with them in the past and there service is spot on) and I will head down to Supercheap and pick up a trailer adapter plug in the next few days (can't to much until the resistors arrive anyway). So as per my earlier thoughts, I am going to solder and heat shrink the resistors into the circuit for the left and right indicators to the earth and attempt to mount them in a way that they are secure and protected.

If anyone is interested in this little project, I can post pics etc on here as I do it ... if not, I'll see how I go and blow this thread away when I'm done.

    Re: LED Load Equaliser

Being one of the electrically/electronicly minded types - you have me very curious, as i've not heard of a "load equaliser" before!

I'm under the impression that the trailer circuits/socket for the prado are (at least for the most part) are supplied via relays, located in the rear passenger side panel where the jack is - so my first impression would be that no it wouldn't have any affect on the cars flasher circuits if connected at the trailer socket.

An automotive flasher relay can be either electronic or thermal activiated - in this instance it appears that the prado flasher is thermal. Anyone have more information? Part number?

LEDs have a lower resistance that incandescent bulbs, which means a greater current draw through the circuit. The flasher is highly dependand on a fixed/known resistance, which heats and cools the bi-metallic strip at a fixed rate, giving you the very steady on-off-on-off. If all the bulbs are replaced with LEDs more current will flow, heating and cooling the bi-metallic strip faster than it was originally designed. Giving you your "car's on crack" appearance!

Interestingly, if a car develops an earth fault in the indicator circuits - the same effect can be seen! Remember that bomb your were behind at the lights the other day? That had the indicator flashing flat out?

How can it be fixed? Not 100% sure, but in theory - if an adequately sized and rated (wattage) resistor is placed inline with the 12V supply to the 'B' terminal on the fasher unit (there should be 3 terminals - one is supply, one is indicators, and one is dash illumination), it will slow down again!

Do not ask what size resistor is required, that would take mathematical calculation... I could work it out with the correct values if someone is willing to send me the information? Such details include, number of globes, number of relays (in circuit), wattage of items and how they are all connected together - ie wiring diragram. Alternatively, a trial and error approach need be taken...

AT A GUESS: try either a "50ohm 5W", or "100ohm 5W" resistor - if it flashes fast - increase resistance; flashes slow - decrease resitance...

      Re: LED Load Equaliser

      M&L,

I will admit that whilst reading a lot of what you wrote my eyes glazed over and may have slightly rolled back in head (not boring, just not electronically minded).

I first learned of load equalisers quite some time ago when doing a garage day for mine and a mates Harleys and when he put LEDs on his bike it had the same effect ... "crack lights" ... very fast indicator flashes. We took his bike to the local custom chopper builder and he had load equalisers (essential just resistors) that are added to the circuit.

I spoke to someone at Jaycar and they suggested a 470ohm 10w resistor, however the ones that stock aren't very rugged so I passed and placed the order through Bright Light Auto.

The Bright Light Auto parts I ordered are here http://www.brightlightautoparts.com/files/LR122.pdf

Anyway, I am gonna give it a go :P But any ideas and feedback is well received ... Thanks!

        Re: LED Load Equaliser

Fair enough mate! The only references i found for "dual load equalisers" were specifically for the Harley - and have more to do with fixing a fault that develops with the security system than with fixing the flashing circuit - although, that was just the impression I got... Wasn't overly interested in the topic and harley electrics not applying - the info was also directed at the person installing - not for the person trying to understand how and why it works or doesn't...

The resistors you ordered will do a similar job - although the circuit diagram has causes the electronic technician and I to go back to the white board for further discussion... It appears to contradict (that is work inversely) to the ideas we previously brain-stormed...

Time for a lung-lollie and even more discussion...

Enjoy - looking forward to seeing photos and your results - i find all this stuff terribly interesting...

          Re: LED Load Equaliser

Well, glad it's stimulated someones grey matter even though it confuses mine

As for the Harleys, we never had a problem with the security system, the motion, alarm and immobiliser were uneffected. It was again simply because we swapped out the stock globes for LEDs which, as you previously stated, reduced the resistance in the circuit.

As for the diagram, I assume it is just introducing resistance to the circuit. That is basically how I intend doing it but using a trailer plug to connect the resistors into the circuit. 1 x resistor from pin 1 to 3 and 1 x resistor from pin 4 to 3 as per the trailer plug pin out http://www.goseeaustralia.com.au/Techni ... +-+How++To this should, in unproven theory, act as if the extra globe has been introduced putting my indicators into rehab (slowing the flashing), as it does when the trailer is hooked up.

I will keep you posted and let you know how it goes. I will draw up a circuit diagram for you when I'm done too (I know it won't be the most complex of wiring diagrams but may help someone, if it is successful, do something similar in the future).

            Re: LED Load Equaliser

One of the nice things about LEDs is the reduced power, so why not change the flasher unit to an electronic one instead of adding in resistors to just waste the power? Heaps of companies make LED flasher cans now.

              nooooooow you tell me :|

Though this could have a negative affect when I hitch up the trailer unless I replace the bulbs in that too.

Might look into this, though now that I've ordered the resistors I am just have a stab at making the unit anyways :P

The operating temp for the Load Equaliser raises concerns for me, It states 170 deg celcius, that is in the baking range, wouldn't that be a very high fire danger and added risk to you and your family if something just happened to rest up against it.

I'll be completely honest with you mate, I didn't read that document in any depth and didn't even notice that. It is a concern, though, my intent is an external application. Obviously now that I know I will be taking that into consideration with any sort of use. I mean you wouldn't even what scrub or brush caught on it at the end of the day if it's reaching that sort of temp.

It is plug and play and works well but when locking or opening the doors with the remote the indicators don't flash so I put led's on the running boards and that shows me when the doors are locked and helps me find the car when its dark in the bush. Hope this helps.

                        Re: LED Load Equaliser

I had a two prong flasher in my mk3 Hilux and that cured the flashers. I moved that flasher over to my Prado and it fits straight in and works great. You are overthinking this by soldering resistors at all lamps.

                          Re: LED Load Equaliser

As I'd already ordered the resistors and they turned up last week I gave it a go (and my intent was never to solder them in at every lamp).

I used a flat square trailor plug and screwed the resistors to the back and wired them into the blank plug. Siliconed up the holes and plugged it in. All up a 5 min job and it works. Now that I've proved that, I will go and look for a LED flasher unit (and globes for the trailer) Which I would have done in the first place had I known :P lol

I will post a couple of pics of the unit when I get a chance.

Update: Well I made the equaliser quite some time ago and it works a treat. Generates a bit of heat so you can't run it for any great length of time. I will post some pics up when I get a chance, just been flat out recently.

Quick question though. Where is the Flasher Can located in the 90 series??

Hi Fellas. I am with you Hawk - I figure that fitting a load equaliser is defeating the purpose of the exercise. An electronic relay type flasher can will pulse at the same rate no matter what the number or wattage of the lamps. If your equalisers are developing heat and using energy, may as well go back to standard lamps. Interesting excercise though. Cheers, Derb.
