  • Loss of Power and High Oil Consumption

You may have read my previous post re, the surging effect I get in 3rd gear @ 1600 RPM. Well it is still doing it and no one seems to knwo why, although one expect suspects the fuel pump is on it's way out due to the age and high KM of the vehicle. There is also a noticable drop in power and torque.

Further to that I have now noticed increased oil consumption. I have no leaks, but am using around 1/2 to 1 litre every couple of weeks around town. On our recent trip north to Darwin I was using that amount every couple of days. One suggestion is a it might be passing out from the Turbo back to the Intercooler.

She has done just over 212,000 km in her 9 years of dedicated service. Maybe I am expecting too much as she grows old gracefully.

If anyone has experienced simialr symptoms and problems your feedback would be appreciated.

Things seem to be going down hill fast.

Now the cruise control has started to switch off all by itself as well!

    What next?

      How is your fuel economy?
Have you had the injectors done up since you have owned her?

The reason I ask is: If you have an over fueling issue, it may be wiping oil away from the bore, causing lack of compression, (loss of power), high oil usage, and iminent engine failure/rebuild time.
Fuel issues should always be attended to quickly, to avoid substantial extra costs. Been there and done that many years ago. $$$$$$$

I had my cruise do the same thing about a year ago, it ended up being the speed sender in the gearbox, it started with the cruise turning off on bumps, but ended up with the speedo not working at all a few weeks later - the cruise cuts out if it thinks the speed has dropped from the set speed by 20km/h or so.

By that time to car would surge when on cruise trying to keep the speed constant but the speed sensor was sending bad information....

          Davros,

fuel economy is fine. Had the injectors overhauled last year. Which seems odd. I think it is the throttle sensor position sensor, although diagnistic hasn't picked up a code to support this.

          Stormy,

The cruise thing seems intermittent. DId not do it on the way home yesterday or again today, odd.

Just an update for those who might be interested.

The Toyota dealer mechanic test drove the truck and for some reason thought surging might be due the rear wheels "wobbling". So he tried it with wheels from another car. Guess what...no difference.

Because of the age iof the truck and high KM, they now they think it might be due to too much free play in the gear box or rear diff.

No idea about the high oil usage, although one tip was the oil seal in the turbo could be to blame.

            More to follow........
