  • Aftermarket v's Genuine diesel fuel filters?

Anyone using aftermarket fuel filters on their vehicle?
Just priced the Toyo job at $77 while Phoenix $20 and Ryco $25.
Now I know that (sometimes) you only get what you pay for,but...
It's hard to find much info like how many microns the elements will filter down to.
Had a look into the phoenix and it has a vertical pleated element the Ryco has more of a wound type media and as yet I haven't gazed into the Toyota one.
Of course the shop guys all claim they meet OEM specs, but I wonder.

Ryco make the filters for Toyota, so if you use Ryco filters they are to the same spec as the Toyota ones.
Ryco also do the filters for other brands.

Not sure if they are the same spec or not. I purchased a Ryco fuel filter for my 1KZ 120 and the filter was significantly different in size. The base clamp ring wouldn't fit so was left off (which I think is there to protect the connection for the water sensor).

Are you sure it was a genuine Ryco, or was it the incorrect filter, as all Ryco filters are the same size, have the same micron specs, as genuine Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, ect.

Yes I am sure. 100% positive it was a Ryco Z252X Fuel Filter as I still have the box. The Genuine Toyota and Ryco Filter are different. It is possible that Ryco produce more than one filter to suit the 1KZ 120 TD Prado but the Z252X is definently different in size.

Here is a link to the correct filters for the Prado

              http://www.rycofilters.com.au/catalo...DCRUISER+PRADO

The Z252X is the correct one, however I would use a CAV type filter for diesel, as it will only cost you about $5 per filter, and the filtration is much better, the glass bowl also shows you any water, bad fuel, and dirt, the cost of the set up does scare a few people off (around $150) but you are much better off being able to see what the fuel is like.

While Ryco may make the filters for the OEM's, there could be a contractual obligation between the OEM and Ryco not to retail the OEM filter under the Ryco name.
Hence Ryco may sell a similar filter that will fit but is not exactly the same in order to meet possible contractual requirments.
The engine company I work for has such agreements in place with its third party suppliers.

Well I bought the Phoenix filter, but after I got it home I had a change of heart....couldn't bring myself to use it...very cheap and nasty looking inside. lol.
Took it back and bought a Ryco Z252X, so hope it is the right one as I have it sitting here to go in (hopefully)
