  • Head blown

    Hi fellow prado owners,

I had the misfortune of blowing a head gasket the other day. Sudden loss of power, revs would not go above 2000 and the fastest moving temp gauge I have ever seen. Felt like the handbrake was on.

So $3300.00 dollars later I am back on the road. I thank the mechanic who did mine because this included a new head, radiator, parts and starter motor. (Man he was thougher). Power steering rack is to come.

The $169.00 head gasket wasn't the problem. The big drive a mac truck through crack in the head between cylinder 3 and 4 was.

The reason I write this blog is so you can be for-warned. 1. Between 150,000km and 180,000km prado heads are known to give up the ghost. According to every mechanic (since the epic event) I have spoken to it happens a lot. (Great) The heads have to be replaced as when this happens the head looses its tempure (hardness) and become soft so if you do a head gasket they have to replace the entire head.

That all said the main reason for my rather drawn out blog is one of the main causes of the death of my motor was.
The radiator was full of grass and western muck. ( I couldn't see all this. when looking at it with out a torch it looked fine).

The temp gauge is to low on the motor so doesn't read there is a problem till your engine is dead.

I will be looking into getting another temp gauge fitted somewhere higher so if there is a problem I will now earlier.

Check your actual radiator by undoing the cap and not looking at the filler bottle is another lesson I learnt.

Ahh well there goes the trip this year.

    Thanks for reading my gripe.

    Cheers Passin'through

    Hi,

Ouch, i do feel for you, having gone through a similar experience. I too own a 1KZ 90 series. I am now having concerns on my engine.

Mine currently has 305Ks, i did a motor swap about 20Ks ago due to the previous owner being careless. It has ran flawlessly till now but lately, i notice that it is losing water not in the rad, but the expansion tank. I made indications on the expansion tank every 24hours before a cold start and it is losing small amounts of water (abt 1-2cms worth). My current motor is imported from japan, so i have no history, but based on the labels, it had a timing belt swap at 100Ks in 2006, so i estimate the motor must have done around 150000Kms when the car was wrecked.

There is also a very minute traces of oil in my coolant (not enough to change the colour of the coolant), some gooey deposit on the filler neck. I'm not sure if that should be a concern. The oil is clean though. I have replaced the radiator filler cap and things seemed to have slowed down abit. I could be wrong on this.

I was wondering if you noticed any similar symptoms when your prado's head was blown.

      Hi hardcrypted,

It does sound suspiciously like a cracked head. Follow the link below and have a read of Steve M's posts as they may provide some insight.

Hi, I would take it in to have it tested. When its hot doe's air bubble into the expansion tank? Any white goo under the oil filler cap when cold? Does it blow lots of water out of the exhaust? Feel like a glow plug has gone? Man the list goe's on and on. Good luck.
