  • Leak in bellhousing area

My prado seems to have a small leak coming from the bellhousing area, but when I look closely, the oil seems to be engine oil and not gearbox oil.

On closer inspection it looks as if the leak is from the back of the oil sump. There does not seem to be a gasket between the sump and the engine block, but just some of the orange silicone, which I assume as degraded with time.

Has anyone had this happen before? I just hope it's not the engine rear main seal.

Rear main seal is rooted, you will have to remove the gearbox and clutch and flywheel to get to it, and while your at it change the clutch, if its an auto then you only have to remove the gearbox and flywheel.

In my experience oil leaks in that area are most likely going to be rear main seal as said above. time for gear box to come out and as stated above replace everything you can while you are there as the gear box is a bit of a mongeral to get out ( I found that if you drop the steering rack it makes it a lot easier) Just my 2 cents.... Good luck and have fun
