Throttle Problems 90 Series Diesel

G'day all,
I've got a problem with my 90 series and I think it's got to do with the fly-by-wire throttle. The reason I think that is because I don't get the symptoms when I drive using the cruise control. The symptoms are like you are running out of fuel when you are just maintaining speed without depressing the pedal, like not coasting and not accelerating but right in between, car accelerates without any hesitation. Have changed the fuel filter twice but this hasn't cleared the problem and it seems worst between 1700 to 2200 RPM and at town speed around 60 kph you can see on the taco revs surge 200 RPM and feel the car surge.

Will pull the plugs on it and give them a good spray of electrical contact cleaner and see if that makes any difference. The engine light has never come on during normal operation and the only time I got it to come on was when I was play around with it under the dash. At the hefty price of around $750 for it I will try a few things first.

Thanks heaps for your very informative reply, Went Merredin Toyota to see how much a new TPS ( throttle pedal switch ) is but they are not sold separately, you can buy the short wiring cable to it. So to fix this I have to spend 800.00 F#*^IN dollars and buy the whole pedal Assembly. So I tested the TPS and found that there was a dead short, pulled the TPS apart to clean the terminals as advised by Toyota but now I can only get an open circuit. Reassembled the whole lot but now the motor wont rev above 1100 rpm's and the engine light comes on. SO I pulled the cable that goes to the TPS and bridged the plug to fool it that the circuit was closed and now the engine runs beautifully once again, rev's up and returns to idle with no pressure on the pedal.
So my questions are
Can you remember the part number of the TPS and were did ya get it and.
If it works being bridged out what da f#!k is the purpose of the TPS.

Bugger that I will leave the bridge in and see what happens, I think that the TPS is used so as the cruise control knows there is no throttle input just guessing.
Typical TOYOTA with there ridiculously priced and TOYOTA specific parts, and I don't think the wrecker are going to show much sympathy either because they would know the price of anew one. Strange though, Merredin Toyota could only find one in all of Australia and thats over in their head quarters so they aren't a commonly needed part.
There is a bloke over here on Gum Tree wanting to buy one for $500 smacka-roos with warranty for a 02 or 05 100 series i think.
