  • Lucas/Delphi diesel pre filters / water traps

    Hi
Anyone running one of the Lucas/Delphi diesel pre filters / water traps?
    Such as this - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Single-CA...item5ae45f4967
I like the glass bowl idea to see whats growing in there but wonder what it would do the fuel pressure having two filters in line.

I believe the Delphi is 4 micron whereas the Toyota is 2 micron so no point in just swapping them over.

    Any user experience?

Go to General Discussion and look at the recent 'Donaldson filter kit' thread. ########## answered some of your questions IRT to secondary filters.

In a nutshell, this system will work, be aware however that its very pushed for space in the engine bay, you'll probably have to mount it to the firewall and that the hose barbs/outlets need to be 3/8". The ebay listing says 5/16" and 5.5 microns, not 4 that you mention, but I'm no expert!

I have a Donaldson kit and it looks like its going to be too big, but the dimensions of this one looks good.

Good luck and let us know if you find out if you can get one with 3/8" barbs.

This type of filter replaces the original filter, it will bolt in, in exactly the same way/spot. The wiring that goes into the bottom of the original filter gets disconnected and stays disconnected. The new filter goes onto the metal base plate and it gets secured by the bolt that goes through from the bottom of the glass bowl, the unit then screws on just like the original filter.
The price of the filter cartridge is only around the $5-$10 mark (depending on where you buy the cartridge from), so for that price you can replace it every service

Only problem is that the micron rating is much worse than the factory unit so I would not be swapping them over.

With that one yes, but you can buy the unit, and buy a better filter through a diesel specialist

I stand corrected then. So this is a CAV/Lucas adaptor for the original filter assembly, I see...

I'd want to see the range of filters that can be fitted to the same spec as OEM though.

Personally, I would just go to a diesel specialist and buy one from them, they are only about another $70, and you will be getting the right one, because if you look through the ad, they say that that filter is not compatable with electronically controlled diesel engines or common rail diesel engines.

Thats only due to the fuel flow restriction by having two filters in series.
I don't think my 90 1KZ-TE is common rail so does need the massive fuel flow that CR diesels need.

Correct, it is not a common rail engine, however it is an electronically controlled one, therefore you need to ensure that the cav filter is one suited to it. The one on ebay is not suited for an electronically controlled diesel.
