Hi,
Recently joined this forum after getting my 01 1KD powered prado as the 3rd owner as its an ex-japan. Awesome vehicle and I've seen that the amount of knowledge on here will give me a head start before I take it to the stealership to get it CEL codes read.
Soon after taking delivery I noticed the car throws a CEL even under moderate acceleration or after driving for about 2 kms. Even takes longer on other days. On hard acceleration the CEL comes on immediately and I noticed some brown smoke billows out of the exhaust for a brief moment while accelerating.
Its also very thirsty. Currently getting 4/5kms per litre and I'm aware this motor can do much better than the 1KZ I was used to. The turbo is good as the car pulls well. There is also a slight whine from the engine when driving at low engine speeds btw 1-1.2k rpms. Maybe this is normal for the car.
Any ideas as what this could be. The mechanic who used to service it tells me the CEL codes were read and it pointed to a faulty gearbox speed sensor which I find hard to believe. The previous owner insists the engine is perfect 'as far as he knows'
Any ideas as to what could be ailing this otherwise great 4x4. Mind you its being driven in the east african tropics.....cheers!
