  • Valve Clearances

    Hello all,

I checked the valve settings on my 1kz-te on the weekend and after nearly 130,000km they came up within 1 thou of nominal spec (10 intake and 12 exhaust). As far as I know they have never been checked as most dealers just like to listen to them instead of actually checking them  . Included some photos for those who are wondering whats under that rocker cover!! I also cleaned the oil out of the intercooler while it was off.

    Cheers Ben

Yota, There was enough to be blocking the 3-4 bars directly in front of the inlet side of the cooler. It wasn't dripping wet but I reckon it would have been costing me a few horses by not transfering the heat as well as it should - especially on these hot days!! Easy job once its off.

        Thanks for the pics Ben.

Mine is also up to 130,000km but from what I have found out to date is these engines are often pretty close to spec.

The intercooler oil thing though has me concerned.

How hard is it to just get that bit off for inspection?

        Cheers

          Stormy,

Pretty easy to remove intercooler, remove main intake pipe that runs from air cleaner to turbo, disconnect throttle and boost sensors and remove temp sensor, release clamps on either side and undo 2 bolts (1 at front and 1 at rear), lift of intercooler. just be carefull not to drop anything down intakes (plug up with rags).

Don't be too alarmed about having oil inside your intercooler - this is normal for most japanese diesels due to the crankcase being vented to the inlet side of the turbo (emissions )

Bet you can't pick my occupation yet

I just checked out the turbo side of my intercooler today and found some oil in there. Might take the intercooler off after the holidays and see what the other side of the intercooler looks like. Has anyone ever put a filter on the breather line, to aviod the oil getting into the intake.

If you had done all of this work by going in through the tailpipe ... I would have guessed you were a Proctologist ...... but since you went in from the front I would have to say you are a Gynaecologist

                  Hi Ben

I too checked the valve clearances and found them to be ok when I first brought my '00 prado early last year - it's got 240000 on the clock so I think you'll go alright with yours. Wise to check though, esp if you can do a valve set with you eyes shut!
On the topic of crankcase ventillation, if you take the oil filler cap off with the engine is running does yours breathe pretty hard out the filler hole?
Mine does a bit, I mean you can feel it about 250 - 300mm above the hole; just wondering does a man of your experience think this may be normal for these engines or does mine have issues that need investigation?
Anyway, I'll hopefully chat to you soon.

                  Thanks

                    Mick,

I just checked mine and it is about the same as what you described. My engine doesn't use any oil between changes so i would consider the blowby to be normal. I wished I checked the forum while i was away for the last 10 days (nearly killed me  ) because I stayed in Dubbo last night. Any further questions give me a yell.

                    Cheers Ben

I've checked mine every 40kms as per the book.
I also checked them before our trip to QLD over Xmas (at 105kms)

At the moment my car has done 114kms and the last time I checked them they wree spot in in the middle between min and max.

I'll be checking them again at 120kms to be sure, but going by what I've read, I should be right until the 160km mark.

Ben (dieselman). What did you use to clean out the I/C?

                        Hello dhula,

All I used was a solvent similar to white spirits/shellite. We use it at work when we need to remove oil off a surface (petrol leaves a oily residue)
