Diesel - Chip with exhaust mods or LPG? Which one.

Which engine mod would you have done to a '01 TD Prado?

For around $2k you can get a DP chip (or equivalent) and exhaust mods as have been discussed here eg Beaudesert exhaust, for increased power and economy etc OR for approx the same $ (after Fed Govt rebate) you could have LPG added to the diesel for increased power etc.

Which would you go for and why?

I have a DTronic and Beaudesert exhaust. I think I would go this way before the gas conversion for the following reasons

1. Reliability - the chips and exhausts are well proven and as far as I know have not compromised the reliability of the 1KZ. Not sure if the gas has the same track record yet?

2. Range - If you go gas you will loose one of your deisel tanks and getting gas when off the beaten track is difficult ( in WA at least). So I feel you will loose range.

3. Gas is going up all the time so the cost savings may not be what you expect in time.

Just my thoughts

1. The diesel gas systems have been installed on hundreds of vehicles. It seems as though all diesel vehicles get pretty much the same system, but setting adjusted to fit that particular vehicle. They say you can remove it from your vehicle when you sell it and install it on the next if you so desire.

2. They don't normally remove a tank. Because the lpg mixes with the diesel at a ratio of 20-30% (as far as i understand), for say 100 litres of diesel you only need a 20l gas tank. I think most of the lpg tanks are about 35l, so they don't take up much space, and when the lpg runs out, your engine just goes back to running on straight diesel until you fill up the lpg again.

3. Gas is going up but still roughly half the cost of diesel and it enables a more thorough diesel burn = more power, less emissions, cleaner engine and oil.

Geez I sound like I work for them. (I'm a Registered Nurse actually and not very mechanical). I am convinced of the benefits of the lpg over a chip/exhaust mods but want all the facts to make the right decision.

I can not even think about LPG, itīs not allowed to drive LPG powered vehicle here. Itīs only allowed for trucks and buses. You have to pay 330 €/day :!: when driving if you have passenger car!!! Stupid laws.
CNG is allowed, but there is no diesel-CNG conversions available.

I have Speedbuster tuning-box, but I think Dtronic is more sophisticated unit.
