  • Diesel: Timing belt due @ 150,000km but what else?

    Yep, its due.....

What else should I inspect/replace at the same time?

    Belt Tensioner?
    Water pump?

    Thanks in advance

When I got my timeing belt done, they replaced the tensioner as well, said for the cost and the efort it isnt worth not doing it.

Yep, belt and tensioner are a must (just ask Pradofreak about it). I would be doing the waterpump at the same time while its all apart.

Another thing is the fan clutch - its done a bit of work after 150,000kms (and these engines don't like to get HOT)

Its one of those how long is a piece of string questions though

      Hope this helps

      Ben

PS I changed my timing belt at 120k just to be sure

Yep thanks to both Yota & Dieselman for your knowledge.

I'm lucky I guess...maybe....most of the kays done on mine are at highway speeds as we are 30km from town. I suspect that you will get less wear & tear per km that way.....anyway thats my theory....

Here is a link on how to change your fan hub oil. Might save you some money compared to a new clutch assembly

Have you changed your fan belts and hoses yet?? just another thought

I did a bit of hunting around until I found a place I was happy with. Turns out that it is a relatively simple job (for those capable of using a spanner!)

            $84 Belt
            $120 Tensioner
            $66 Labour

            $270 Total

A bit better than the $800 odd dollars I found quoted elsewhere!

PS Snorkel goes on next week....don't tell anyone

              Timing Belt due @ 150,000Km

That's interesting, I'm sure the sticker on the timing cover of my Jap import Prado Diesel said the timing belt was due for replaced at 100,000km?? It was changed a little over this at 105,000km so the sticker has now been replaced so I can't confirm it.

I wonder why there's a difference? Maybe idling around the streets of Tokyo is seen as being a bit harder on the timing belt than cruising on the open road in Aussie.

              Cheers, Iain

Early Diesel Prados with the same engine had the timing belt set at 100,000km.....The later ones at 150,000kms. I'm not sure when the cutover was but mine is a 2001 yr model.

                Cheers
