  • head replacement, what's worth doing at the same time?

Newbie here. So my '96 Prado with 180km original on it has the dreaded cracked head, all 4 pre combustion chambers show cracks, whilst it's apart what else is worth doing to it, I plan to have the injectors and injector pump overhauled, it had to be wound over for a while when cold to start and thought maybe air was getting in somewhere so will do this, I'll also do the cambelt. Anything else I should renew/overhaul whilst the head is off. I will add I intend to replace the radiator and check or replace the viscous fan coupling as well. I read somewhere there is something you can do to decrease the copious clouds of black smoke that exit the exhaust under hard acceleration....can anyone throw any light on that subject?

That's very low K's to be considering injector pump or even injectors. (Big job to pull the pump)
I presume you'll be fitting a new head, not wasting time and $$ trying to fix the old one?
Slow start might be glow plugs and combined with the head it's probably to shout it a new set.
Cam belt for sure, tensioner too.
Some will do the water pump at this time.
Can't check the viscous fan coupling without the car going.
Mine has never smoked but mine is fly by wire, think yours would be cable?

Thanks Carco, yes, fitting a new AMC head, done the glow plugs a few months back, I won't worry about the injector pump but will have the injectors serviced. Cam belt was done 60ooo kms ago but will do that and the water pump etc again for peace of mind. Yes will check the viscous fan.
Any ideas on the radiator, is there one available with more cores? apparently the standard cooling system is marginal at best, hence all the cracked heads. I'll shout it a new thermostat too.

I've had no luck with radiators.
Bought an eBay cheapie and then a Natrad which turned out to be identical to the ebay.
Neither have enough capacity when towing, both are single tube style.
They're OK as a car but definitely need something better if you're towing.
Might have to be built unless you can source a twin tube Denso.

Denso is standard Toyota original, Aussie Desert Coolers have impressed me in alloy, PWR have not.

Another thing, I'll post as a new topic but how can I tell if my head is the long or short valve version without actually taking out a valve and measuring it?
