Hi all,
I have a 2001 turbodiesel that has done about 145,000km. While driving this week the low oil level light came on and when I checked the oil (with cold engine) the level was a few mm below the minimum mark on the dipstick.
A similar thing happened back in April when returning to Qld from the deserts in western Victoria. We had gone through a massive dust storm south of Broken Hill a couple of days before. At the time I went to the nearest servo, refilled the oil and blew out the air cleaner with compressed air.
This time around I also checked the air cleaner and actually found some fine dust on the intake side. On looking at the condition of the air cleaning I think that I must have forgotten to change it after that Victorian trip.
So now I am worried about my engine. I will continue to monitor oil consumption (I do all oil changed myself). Is it possible and likely that dust has entered my engine and done some damage? Would this result in excessive oil consumption? If the engine is damaged how do I tell and what kind of repair is likely - new rings, new cylinder liners? Expensive?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Chris
