hi all
i have a 96 landcriuser prado which around christmas time started blowing black smoke and losing power , so i took it to my local garage explained the symptoms to them and straight away they said the waste gate was stuck open on my turbo and it would be easier to put a new turbo on then mess about with the old one. So i rang toyota main dealer for a price and was told £1500 or there abouts which is way to much i thought , so looked on ebay for a prado turbo to no avail , i then decided to look for a surf one and managed to get one local to me for £100 which the local garage fitted for £120 .When i picked the car up they told it was all sorted so feeling relieved i drove out the gate i got about 1 mile down the road and took it straight back as their was a total loss of power after waiting two weeks till they could fit it in again they found that they hadn't tightened the pipes up on the turbo ,so i tried again got down the road and it had the power but the orginal problems was still there .. when i took it back to the garage again he said i need to take it to a diesel speciallist but due to ill health the only one in my town is shut so went to another garage who said they could find nothing wrong due to the faults being intermittent .. i was then stuck as to what to do so searched the internet and this site and other toyota sites and decided the problem may be the EGR valve which none ov the garages the mentioned, so yesterday i plugged the vacum pipe on the EGR valve with a ball bearing which had an immediate effect of stopping the black smoking and seems to have cured the power problem.
sorry for the long essay lol hope this helps other people who have the same problem
