  • How Tough is the 1KZTE

While cruising along at 100 kph, sudden loss of power and huge puff of black smoke out the exhaust, then all back to normal a second later. The next day I have white smoke and rough idle on cold start.

Take it to a diesel specialist who finds two buggered glow plugs, one with the tip missing.

Problem persists. So I take it back to get the injectors serviced, although the mechanic thinks it is a symptom of a problem somewhere else. Then it all became clear. He had problems getting #2 injector out. He found the collar that sits in the injector port allows the injector to screw in to the pre-combustion chamber wasn't there, just dissappeared, just a big black burnt out hole in the cylinder head where it used to be. So a call to Toyota as the head had only been replaced around 14 months before.

The area rep has a look and its on a tow truck to the local dealer. Then it gets worse. The part had burnt/broken up ended up in the cyclinder and damaged the top of the piston!

Now it seems that explains the huge cloud of black smoke and the glow plug with no tip. But what a donk! I'd been driving it for a couple of 1000 km over 3 months with no loss of power, performance or economy!

Toyota will check the turbo for damage as well.

    Love the Tojo diesel

Bloody hell Wizard, that would have given you a fright!

Amazing the whole engine didn't explode  Hope they don't find anything else seriously wrong and you get back on the road soon. My old girl is up to 220 000k's and still going strong, touch wood.

    Cheers

      Mark,'

yes the obligatory oh, !@#$, what the $%^& was that, but then right back to normal as though nothing had happened.

If anything is found that has been casued by incident will be made good by Toyota as it was caused by a replacement component failure as I had the head replaced last year.

We had a similar thing with out 60 Series Diesel. The tip broke of a glow plug and in despiration in the middle of WA we tried to blow the piece out the exhaust. It was un sucssfull. We then had to have the head off in outback WA. However the piston was damaged, but we replaced the head anyway. The car did another 150,000kms and 10 years.

          Cheers

Same thing happened to my 1KZ, driving along started clattering then missing. Did a compression test and number 2 was low. Pulled head off tip of glow plug tip had fallen off, stuffed up the valve seats and embedded itself into the top of piston. Ended up cosing me a 2nd hand piston, new head and couple of valves and this was at 85,000km. I blocked off the EGR when I replaced the head. I am going to replace the glow plugs at regular intervals as dont wanna fork out all that coin again.

Mick, I bought your Surf and it did die! Cost me $2700 the month after I bought it. Reco'd the injector pump as it was leaking fuel all over the shop, new rear main seal and new slave and master cylinder. The clutch stuck to the floor as I was coming down from Mt. Corree in the Brindabella's and it nearlly killed me and my 3 mates! Probably an oversight on my behalf more than yours though. It was however, an incredibly capable vehicle off road. I was soon to palm that old girl off to someone though none-the-less.

The Toyota 2LT-E was a piece of ****, no doubt about it.
