  • Blow-off valve on 1KZ-TE

    Hey all,

Does anybody did this modification to his engine - by installing a BLOW-OFF valve. I know - that people who own Hilux Surf with 1KZ engine have this kind of installation.

Pictures with installed blow-off on 1KZ-TE will highly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Maxim

Sometimes I feel like I would like to steer my Prado into those stupid rice burner cars with blow off valves.

My understanding is a blow off valve is used to release the sudden pressure rise when the butterfly valve is closed when the throttle is released. As most diesels (older ones) don't have butterflies, can't see why you would need or want one.

            Waltec,

Yes I understand that - so there is not way you can install one.

The concept is that the sudden dead end on the throttle butterfly closing during gear changes causes the turbo impeller to stall and there is a brief lapse of boost (= power) on re-application of the throttle as it has to spool up again. A blow off valve (BOV) dumps this pressue to atmosphere when the throttle closes.

The 1kz has a throttle butterfly and indeed makes vacuum (needed to trigger the BOV on closed throttle. (late model diesels run a throttle butterfly as part of the EGR system; you need vacuum at idle to draw in the large amounts of EGR gasses manufacturer like to run at idle to meet emissions; 20% egr gas or more)

On early model 1kz's with a cable throttle it's possible to fit a blow off valve. Your best bet is to search through the Toyota Surf Forum for information as some on there have done it. Your problem being finding a valve that operates at very low vacuums to trigger it (there is very little to play with)

A BOV won't work on later models with fly by wire throttles as the stepper motor doesn't snap shut the throttle fast enough to give the sudden vacuum signal requires to activate a BOV.
