1KZ-TE cuts out at exactly 7 mins - ends up no problem for rest of day.

  • 1KZ-TE cuts out at exactly 7 mins - ends up no problem for rest of day.

    Start engine idle for 7 minutes - stalls.

    Can start straight back up.

    Might stall 0 -5 times over next few minutes - then no problem from there.



    To make me go extra crazy - sometimes it has had periods of not cutting out for a week.



    So far:

    Got another ECU (wanted a spare anyway) out of NZ.

    Did not fix it.


    Saw leak at water sensor under fuel filter. Replaced Primer pump, fuel filter, the 2 fuel pipes (high pressure pipes), water sensor (new ring) and used decent clips.

    Did not fix it.

    Air leak somewhere else - between tank and primer pump?

    Fuel pump stuffed?

    Open circuit from ignition ?


    Bad sensor readings to ECU cutting it out?

    Manifold pressure sensor
    Boost pressure sensor,
    Crank shaft angle sensor
    Tempature sensor (think there is one on fuel pump)
    Water temp sensor ( below cap - i don't think prados have these here)

    PS I have a 1KZ-TE Hiace 4WD supercustom not a prado, but being a used import, there isnt much knowledge/help out there. But a my vehicle is very similar to the 1KZ-TE Prado.

    If it has an ECU there might be a DIAG connector somewhere. Can you pull the codes when it dies? Short TC and E1 in the diag connector and read the flash codes on the dash ECU light?

      thanks, did that no error codes.

      think it was te1 and e1 from memory - just uniform flashing, no gaps.

        Second hand ECU? May still be the problem, the caps will be getting old. I had some weird behavior too..

          If it cuts out and then restarts straight away, I wouldn’t be looking for air leaks or such. If she stopped from air she wouldn’t restart.
          I’d be looking at some electrical gremlin.
          Anyone fitted a turbo timer and done a rubbish instal, that sort of thing.
          Something that will turn off the engine as quickly as turning off the key.

            Following on Carco's line... when it stalls do you just get charge and oil pressure lights, or the full suite like you just just turned on the key?

              There is a non return valve in the head of the fuel filter housing..This prevents fuel back flow from the filter back towards the fuel tank. Rectify by replacing the standard fuel filter housing head. Oldmac Toyota my local Toyota kept my 2007 Prado Common rail diesel over night then pressure tested fuel system in the morning. Kitbags

                It is has been happening exactly after 7 1/2 minutes idling from cold. If engine hot it does not stall at all.

                70% of time it starts up instantly /within seconds after stalling - sometimes times it needs 4 seconds cracking though and if left at low revs may happen again.. after a few more minutes though it is good to go for the day if it isnt left standing for hours and hours.


                I am now unplugging sensors (eg fuel temp sensor on injector pump) and running it for 10 mins as test with engine light on.

                It did a little rev like it was going to stall (very small one) with fuel temp sensor unplugged but did not cut out which is a first for weeks, but i report back - i know better than to trust this without more days testing.

                After I installed a new primer pump and 2 fuel pipes/clips - it did not cut out for days ... then it all came back. The same when I installed another ECU.

                I ended up unplugging the ECU overnight I got so paranoid - didnt make any difference - kept on doing it.



                Hard to know what signals the ECU would use to cut the engine out if any.


                The voltage on the spill valve seems to go to 0v for a second then comes back.

                Stumped..

                  Righto, 7/12 minutes.... could suggest something to do with the glow circuit? I have played around with the glow system when looking for a hard starting problem and noted a long afterglow. I will see if I can dig up the Denso fuel pump service/description manual.

                    Found the manual, but the afterglow seems to be linked to water temp. Can supply for interest if you don't have it.
                    Someone check me on this , but the spill valve going to zero suggests that the ECU is trying to keep the engine running by fully fuelling it?

                      thx for the info. why thr glow plug circuit after 7 mins?

                      I wouldnt think unplugging the water temperature sensor would cause the engine to cut out - just maybe pump in a bit more fule than necessary/? not sure... thx...
