  • D4D injectors in the 90 series

    Hello,

I have an 90 series prado from 2002 with a D4D engine in it, did you guys get that version in australia? In europe it was an upgrade since 2000 till 2002. Would this be the same engine as in the 120 prado?

Found a lot of info about the injectors and the seats in the d4d engines in 120's but never found any info from in the 90 series. Would these have had the same problems with the injectors?

Tried to look up through the oil plug on the sump, to see in what kind of state my oil pickup was but couldn't see it even with an endoscope.

Mine is an 2002 90 prado with 320 000km roughly, with original injectors and seals, turbo and springs, shocks... Owned it for a year and I think it drives good but who knows. In Belgium there isn't any real offroad areas so it has driven on roads for 99% of it's life.
    Interested to hear your feedback!

I'm no specialist on this engine but I've been considering a 1KZ-TE to 1KD conversion so have had my head in this space a bit lately.

Yes I think your ara engine was known to be problematic as it was the first of the common rails. Had some teething issues by the sounds of it. Regarding the oil pickup problem, from my understanding, that blockage issue only occurs if you don't change the oil regularly and the oil turns sludgy. To me that sounds like a pretty extreme case. It wouldn't hurt running a cleaning agent through your oil system at some point just to give it a general flush but my feeling is this isn't that common of an issue and as long as you use quality oil at regular intervals and regular filter changes, I think you'll be fine.

The injector thing is a bit concerning. I wouldn't take a chance with that. I'd get yours inspected soon before they do cause a problem. Sounds like you've had a good run out of yours. Fourby4 diesel on YouTube explains this issue well and how to avoid it.

There’s a lot of info about this topic.
Early KD’s had injector seal problems. Combustion gases leaked passed the injector seals cooking the engine oil which eventually coated the oil pickup in the sump.
Then there is the cracked piston saga.
Right up into late 150’s Toyota was coming up with improved pistons, eventually throwing in the towel and offering the GD with a raft of new problems.
The GD has survived and now seems fairly reliable, albeit hugely lacking in power when compared to other manufacturer’s offerings.
