  • Results of Mod and Dyno Tune

Well had the Hiclones taken out and had the old girl dyno tuned.

Increase after dyno tuning was 24 Nm torque and 3.7 KW power.

Using the rule of thumb of 33 % loss though the drive train my current power output is some where in the vicinity of 119 Kw! Yes not as good as the D4D but better than standard (improvement of approx 25%)

Thats from a 5 YO TD (124000+ km) with a (very dirty)K & N airfilter, Dtronic and 2 3/4 inch mandrel exhaust with 3 inch dump pipe.

I'm still to find the formula to convert the torque as it is higher at the rear wheels unlike power.

Do you have the dyno charts?
Petrol Prado 4.0L with Unichip got 119Kw at the wheels... With the standard 180kw at the engine looks like loss is around 40%+....

Hey wizard that's pretty amazing, I was thinking about doing the same setup to my Prado. I have a few questions too, How has the drivability improved, what's the economy like? And i'm I correct to think it cost about $3000.

$3000, seems a little high ...the Dtronic was $1200 and the exhaust $1000 (fitted) by Beaudesert Exhausts who specialise in mandrel systems for 4WD. If you fit a DP Chip thats around $1500.

Mind you it wasn't all done at once. Fitted the Dtronic back in 2004 when they first came out.

        Drivability is much improved.

        No turbo lag
        Better pickup at lower revs
        Better acceleration
Holds speed in higher gears better under load

Economy seems to be pretty good so far I'll post the figures when I fill up next.

After checking some other websites the estimated figure for power improvement (at the flywheel) may have been a little high and seems more around 114 kw with torque around 400 Nm.

The real test will be when I tow the van.

          Sounds pretty good Wizard,

I don't do any towing, so would you think it would be a worth while mod or not.

            Andy,

it depends how much you are willing to spend and what you want to achieve.

We've towed a caravan ever since we had the car, sort of the reason we bought it. Always after improvement to give us a bit more for that. We cruise along at 100 kph with the van 5th gear no worries, truckies hate me because I do the speed limit and that was before the exhaust change.

Even towing a boat (900 kg) passed a road train up hill 5th gear at 120 kph (I was in the NT so the speed was OK) from 90 kph. Always happy to have the extra when you need it.

But either the Dtronic, DP Chip or exhaust will make the vehicle more driveable and in some way provide more economy (best I got was 10.5L/100 Km from Goulbourn to Gold Coast via Sydney morning peak, now thats not too shabby) as you have more power and torque at lower revs so tend to stay in higher gears longer. This improved torque is also important when doing serious off road stuff especially sand driving.

Rumour has it the 95 series KZJ95 is a bit of a slug, I tend to agree and you can make it better.

If it were me I'd do the exhaust first and fit a K&N air filter. Thats your cheapest option then if you want more go the ECU improvement.

              Fuel Economy Update

First fuel useager figures are in. Used 11.5 L/100km on the main tank. Now some of that driving is around town in here Brisbane and the Gold Coast, some up to the hills to the west of Brisbane to Mt Nebo and the hills around the back of the Gold Coast through Natural Bridge to Murwillumbah, up the old hilly Pacific Highway, as well as a lot of freeway up and down the M1.

Given the wind resistence of the ARB steel roof rack and weight of drawers, etc, as well as its been really windy here, I think the figures aren't too bad, not brilliant, but not too bad. I'm now onto the sub tank so I'll see what range I get all up.

                  Andy,

I take those fuel figures for new cars with a grain of salt. They test them on test tracks with no add ons like bull bars, roof racks, 4 adults and a full payload in the cargo area do they?

The best I ever got was 10.5 L/100km with the roof rack off, conservative highway and freeway mostly on cruise between Goulburn and the Gold Coast.

Update on fuel economy. Now down to 10.3 L/100 km. Not sure if it just the mods or the use of Flash Lube in the last two tank loads having a positive effect.

Hey Wizard is that Highway, I have gotton My TD auto down to 11L/100km, but in the city it's more like 14-16L/100km. I don't think the 265/75r16 BFG MT's help.

From these results I'm slowly starting to convince myself about installing a 2.75-3" Mandrel Bent exshaust (which would you pick), Dump Pipe, and installing a Snorkle but modifying the air intake from the original because it's very restrictive with the snorkle fitted, then maybe a K&N. Then if I'm not happy I'll go for a Chip.

Anyways when I got back From Canada I'm going to get serious about modding the Prado, I think All of these mods should cost me about $1500 without the dump pipe. Do you think its worth the money for the dump pipe or not?

Again I'm am astounded at the fuel economy since removing the Hiclones and fitting the better exhaust.

Just returned a figure of 9.9 L/100km. A mixture of Brisbane city driving and freeway. Nothing special about driving tcechnique apart from changing up sooner.

Got 620 Km from the maintank before switching over which included towing a trailer for 250 km of it. (10.8 L/100km)

Well there you go, those new car fuel figures for the D4D are more than achievable. Just out of interest I can regularly get better than they claim.

                          You have done well

                            Andy

Regarding the exhaust system, Wizard put me onto the system he has and over the weekend I did a bit of HWY cruising at 100km/h. I have just recorded 240km from the first quarter of the main tank which I suspect is a record for me. The exhaust is a very worthwhile mod in my opinion and as my exhaust was stuffed anyway it was good sense to get it upgraded. Make sure you get the dump pipe done as well as a mandrel bent system for maximum effect.

                            Cheers
