The only difference I've noticed off road was the increased purr when climbing slight inclines (sounds good). I haven't noticed reduced engine braking, but I didn't watch for it either...

abit old but how did you fit the Y piece in with out removing the gbox crossmember? or did u remove the crossmemeber?

edit: ended up jacking up the rear and sliding in the y piece. would have been easier if it was on a hoist.

Found the passenger side to be the hardest part of the install, as there is very little space and had to remove the bolts (6mm socket) to fit them in. Also had to move the brake lines back abit so it doesn't hit the extractors, but still very close to the brake lines, clutch slave and diff breather.
Driver side was easy, lots off room to fit except for the p/s bracket and intake that needs to be moved.
The Y piece took awhile as I couldn't get it into position, but once the rear was lifted the Y piece went in easy enough.
Car sounds abit more like a commo ecotec v6 lol

          Hi Glen,

Did you notice any pinging at all after the install of the extractors?

No, but engines are not my forte - would it sound obvious?

You wont get any pinging from fitting extractors, it only comes from bad fuel, timing out spark plugs gaped wrong, air/fuel ratio wrong or excessive cylinder heat due to the above .

Extractors make an engine breath better.

Im not sure Glen, thats partly why I was asking, as I had some redbacks fitted and hadnt noticed anything but then I fitted a K&N filter and I am fairly sure that it started pinging. It had all the symptoms e.g. the metal "ping" sound for one, and only happened when under load/taking off from a stand still. I replaced the original filter and it seems to have gone away. So I can only assume that either, It wasnt pinging in the first place or what I suspect was that the filter was letting too much air in and the mixture was leaning out way too much and for some reason the ECU wasn't retarding the ignition.

Most likely AFR's. If you reset the ECU more then likely it would relearn the tune.

Yup tried the ECU reset, didn't go away. Having driven around today the sound is still there even with the stock air filter. I also cleaned the MAF sensor. Having read a bit more, apparently extractors can just amplify engine noise such as the valves opening and closing due to the thinner metal used where as the cast iron stock ones hide the noise more. So it might just be that. Might take it somewhere this week just to be sure.

To my mind the only way fitting extractors and air filter would cause pinging would be if your fuel injectors were in need of a clean (or replacement). That is the improved intake and exhaust flow causes a lean fuel air mixture because the injectors are not flowing correctly. Remember the knock sensor doesn't come into play till your above 3000 rpm, so at a guess your hearing the ping around 2250 -2750 rpm? I would be either removing the intake manifold to pull the injectors for a proper clean or at least clean in situ (not as good though).
I know when I had my injectors done prior to fitting the blower they were way out of spec yet no obvious performance issues.

Maybe put a tank of 98 octane in or throw in some octane booster and see if you can still hear the pinging. I'd also check your timing which can also cause detonation if its to advanced. Does your engine management light come on when it pings ?

It doesnt matter what octaine fuel you use in the 5VZ, as it makes no difference to the burn or fuel consumption, or anything else like that, as the ECU can not read what octaine fuel your using.
Also, you can not change the timing of the engine as it is all controlled by the ECU
I would say it is more a case of weld expansion and contraction under heat differences in the exhaust system, as that can sound like the engine pinging.

If you have a faulty CPS it will change the timing

It was happening at any rpm while labouring but went away after about 2500RPM. Hopefully its not the injectors, I had a full carbon clean done prior to having the extractors fitted. There is no engine light and I have checked the ECU by bridging the terminals etc and its showing no faults detected. Dropped it off at the mechanic today and he suggested it might be coil lead/s arcing. Back on the topic of extractors, albeit redbacks not pacemakers, I've had quite a few comments about how good it sounds, love it.
