  • 90 series muffler power valve

    Hi guys,

    This is my first post and I was wondering if anyone had some information on the power valve in my muffler in the 90's exhaust system which according to my Gregory's repair manual alters the gas flow at high speed and improves power and fuel consumption it says this valve can also be removed.but other than saying that it gives no more information. I guess im wondering if it is adjustable? Should it be seviced? Does it restrict power in any way?

    I'm not having any real problems but any little improvements that can be made is always worth exploring

    Has anybody had any experiences or problems with this?

    Hi, I took my power valve out ages ago, only a litle bit noisier but also picked up a little bit more power in the 1500-2500rpm, just enough to notice. I would say that Toyota did that to better muffle the engine note, being a V6 it's a bit raspy

      Does it leave a hole in the end of the resonator if you remove it?

      Or do you replace the 'cover' and just removed the 'innards'?

        Thanks for the reply, will try and remove mine tomorrow to see if there is any noticeable improvement for me aswell.

          The power vale is there to improve low rmp torque. Unless you want to turn the Prado into a street machine and/or supercharge it, I would be leaving the exhaust alone.

          The one mod that may improve performance across the rev range are extractors. The stock manifold is junk that's made to a price.

          glen_ep has installed Pacemaker extractors and reckons the performance gain is noticeable and the harmonics that the 3.4L normally gets at 2750rmp are now gone.

            Does /would this valve ever need cleaning or maintenance. Does it ever get a bit blocked??

              Well, I guess it's possible... but it's a pretty fool proof system. I've never seen or heard of one failing. Not even sure how you'd go about doing any maintenance on it.
