  • Oil from the rear oilseal of the crankshaft?

Today I was at the dealer for my annual APK (MOT ?) The car was on a bridge and I could walk around under the car.
I saw quite a bit off oil dripping from the back of the engine and I was a bit surprised. I have bin under the car every now and then but I did not notice it earlier.
It came from between the gearbox (auto) and the engine. I think I is the rear oil seal from the crankshaft.
I know this happens with some older models Landcruisers , but I never read something about this happening to a Prado. Does anyone know if this is also common to a Prado 95 V6? It has about 170.000 km on it.

    Thanks Bor

You could be lucky Glen, and be like me, mine has not leaked there yet and it has over 333000k's on the clock, the only leak it has had was from the rocker cover gasket.

            Hello all,
Last week I had the seal changed, the mechanic said it was really leaking bad. Time it was changed.
Was a hard job, it took them about 18 hrs. The car was really dirty and the were some small issues of getting the thing apart (due to corrosion and dried dirt).
            thanks for all your advice.

18 hrs is a very big job. Rear main seal on a prado is usually about 4 hrs.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

I think even less, being an Auto, it is just a matter of undoing the tail shafts, the bolts that connect the trans and engine and the trans mounts, then just slide the trans back and down out the way, pull out the old seal, clean up the old oil, and put it all back together, a very simple job, even if there were stuck bolts, I would be questioning the mechanic on the 18 hrs.

Same as me with a bit over 250,000km. I too did recently have an oil leak from the rocker cover gasket area. Oil had started leaking down the side of the engine on one side. I was dreading it was the gasket. I though I'd check the tightness of all 6 bolts on the sides of the rocker cover and they were very loose. When I turned them with a ring spanner they turned quite freely. I tightened them up real tight and cleaned off the oil with degreaser. The leaking seems to have stopped but I'll keep an eye on it from time to time. It lost a litre of oil within 2,000km.

You may as well change the gaskets, they are only $20 each from Toyota, I did the whole lot while the covers were off, as I did the spark plug tube seals as well, they are only $10 each, It gave me a good chance to see how the engine was on the inside too, and all was extremely good, it was very pleasing.

A mechanic I spoke says most of them start to do it around the 250k mark. I had mine replaced during a clutch job, and they said it did have some oil on the outside of the seal.
