  • fuel... again

Hi every one. I'm a new member as of last week from bunbury in west aus. Just bought our 1st Prado is 95 series petrol vx. I was reading a thread about fuel consumption and its got me a little worried. Every ones averages around town are normal 18l/100k ish. I just done one this week with a phone app as I was a little concernd about the consumption of ours came back with 28l/100k about half the main tank is gone at 160kms. Car has 200000 on the clock full service history show nothing wrong. Has arb steel winch bar, arb roof basket, both tanks full, 265/75r16 micky t 4 ribs. We are looking at driving over to Melbourne in January so trying to get it all sorted out price wise ect. My questions are will taking the basket off improve fuel consumption enough to worry about? a k&n filter apparently is a good way to go? And is there anything else worth while doing?

    Thanx ahead

Ps. Sorry for re threading this question

You may find it just needs a good service.
I can get my V6 down to the low 11's, make sure you have the correct spark plugs in it, (they MUST be twin ground minimum), make sure the MAF sensor is clean and working correctly, as well as the throttle position sensor and idle sensor.

The only time I've hit 28l / 100 was on Stockton beach, after dark, high tide and traveling from the wreck back to the caravan park at the northern end in soft, deep sand. So soft it wore the words off the Cooper ST's in parts.
I average 18l with all the stuff you've mentioned and thats even when doing a very painful job of mine where I cover about 85 k's in 6 hours of driving around Brisbane city.

Even towing my very large boat in Sydney I get about 18 l/100 km. Around town at least 14.5 l/100 km.

I just did a rough calculation with an iphone app also, this is working an incorrect speedo due to 285(33") tyres etc, etc. I started with a full main of 90L and drove til it stopped literly (by mistake) and i was on 500 km exactly so it workedout at 18L/100km, this was mostly city driving an one trip to central coast and back.

I have a sprts muffler as well which seemed to improve power a little but i fitted this in the first week of owning the Prado so I dont know f it made things better or worse. I had better economy before I changed the tyres.

              Mine is V6 manual.

On the original tyres I was able to get around 11L/100km on free way.

cleaned the MAF sensor this arvo between some nice wind and showers haha. front of the sensor was really clean. but when i removed the sensor the back was all filthy so maybe the last service they didnt clean it right :S the filter looks like it may be the original one by the state of it :S so will take it to work when power is re connected (hopefully tomorrow) and get the compressor gun onto it. oil seems a little low still very clean though. may get some new plugs 2morro aswell as it is due for its 200k service.

There are specific MAF cleaners available. They are fragile things so be easy on it.

Yeah I was carefull. Went to auto one and asked what I should use. Can't remember what its called. But will see how it goes.

As for if the sensors mentioned are working correctly I guess I just take it to Toyota?

This probably isn't accurate. If your sub tank wasn't full, there would have been some fuel transferred to it from the main tank while you ran on the main tank. Leaving that aside, the fuel gauges on these aren't very accurate at the best of times.

You're much better off calculating fuel economy by zeroing your trip meter when you fill up and seeing how much fuel is needed next time you fill up. L/100km = L ÷ (km ÷100).

Eg, you drove 250km used 40L filling the tank:
                          40 ÷ (250 ÷ 100)
                          = 40 ÷ 2.5
                          = 16L/100km
