  • engine life of 3.4lt?

Hi, Ive been reading good things about the 2.7lt engine and i am looking at buying a Grande with 283,000km on the 3.4lt motor. Would i be right in assuming thats about 70-80% of the engine life? And how much is a recon engine, would it be better to swap or recon the original? thanks, Keith

    Keith,

We have a Grande V6 and has chalked up 290,000km. We have had no mojor issues as yet but we need to get a new aircon pulley pump bearing. Other than that there seems to be heaps of life left in the old girl yet. Out of interest can you give me some details of the one you are talking about. We are thinking of selling ours soon and want to get an idea of what its worth. Yours is the first one that I have seen with close to my Kms on it.

      3.4lt engine life

Heya Bigfella, thanks for the reply, its the second '97 Grande that ive been looking at, the first one had 210,000 and was priced at $16,990 but it sold before i got to it, woulda been a good buy, and this one is the same price with 283,000 on the clock. Ive got a 1990 Hilux with 375,000 on the clock and still going good, but rust is my big enemy. Its on gas 22r motor and gas is definately good for burning clean and prolonging engine life. Have you changed the timing belt? Keith

        Keith,

Yup we changed it at 100k, 200k and due in 10k. Hopefully sold before then.

We were looking at 14k for our old girl, so that seems about ball bark as a private sale.

          Hello !
I'm the first time here . My name is Marek , I live in Poland . I'm going to buy the second hand Prado / J 95 in Europe / with engine : like above .
It has 200 kkm on the clock . Are You sure the % ? Here in Poland , 3.4 is very rare motor . I even can't ask , because from 1996 or 1997
is probably too early for the end of motors life . 70-80 % it gives us 350-400 kkm total mileage . If We compare it with good , older diesels engines , it's not too much , but on the other hand it is still 150 kkm to run / in my case / if with LPG is the same , maybe less ?

          regards

          Marek

            Marek,

As I said before, mine now has 292,000km and has been faultless to date. The motor is still pulling strong, not blowing smoke or anything like that. If the motor has been looked after with regular oil changes etc it should last for ages. As with any purchase make sure you can see the service records.

My parents just bought a Subaru Forester that is 10 years old, but it has an immaculate service history with receipts for every service from new included.

            Keep those oil changes up!

I have had my 97 Grande for a couple of months now. I bought it with 230,000km on clock. It is in tidy condition and I picked it up from a yard for $12,800 with 10 months rego. I have since put it 15,000km on it with no major worries. I think I have done the air con pulley bearing like Big Fella. It still pumps out cold air but makes a bit of noise doing it. I am about to lift mine and fit some coopers ATR's to it .

I have a mate with 265k on his and it is still going strong. Hope this helps.
              did I do that?

I just sold my 1998 RV 2.7L 180000 for $11500, which I thought was not a bad price redbook had the top private sale price as $11900

It was in top condition though with a full service history.

Now I just have to wait for the new one to arrive

                  prices/aircon

The subject seems to haved moved on to prices so while we're at it , i bought a 99 RV6 with 186,000klms, in good condition for $12,500. Its in getting a gas conversion at the moment. Great car but thirsty, and the aircon is pissweak compared to our camry, anyone else reckon the aircon is crap or does it need a re-gas? The other thing it needs is wider tyres as the 215,s on it are not great in the sand. I am on the look out for alloys and tyres and will try a few wreckers. Keith

                    Re: engine life of 3.4lt?

                    Hi all,
                    1st time poster -
I have a question regarding engine life of the 3.4l
I have a 99 GXL which now has 245,000 kms on the clock. We bought the car in 2000 when it only had 15,000k
The car has been serviced every 5000 by a mechanic until it reached 100,000 now it gets serviced by a mechanic every 10,000 and I change the oil every 5000.
Last year we bought a trackabout camper trailer and I have certainly noticed the drop in performance when towing.
Although the Prado is set up like we want it - for extended touring, I am now starting to question if changing to a another car is worth it.
In July this year, I am taking 12 months off work and will travel around Australia with my family which includes 3 kids hence the camper trailer and estimate to do at least approximate 30,000 kms on this trip.
My question is what sort of life are people getting out of their vehicles ? - mine already has the 245,000 on the clock and I can expect to do another 40,000 plus in the next 18 months. Your answers will help us decide on wether to change vehicles before we go or wait till we get back and see how she is going then ?

                      Re: engine life of 3.4lt?

I have been in the engine reconditioning game for 25 years and have questioned other people in the trade about the 5VZFE and no one can comment as they have never re-built one so I came to the understanding they are a very strong motor I am sure there is quite alot pushing 350k and I am happy to think I have at least 200k + left in the old girl

                        370K on mine.
Regular servicing and replacement of items (fan clutch, AFM in last year) as needed and feels like its good for that many again.
No nasty noises or ticks and power seems A ok. Doesn't burn oil, fuel consumption unchanged.
Happily take it to Cape York.
Saw one 12 months ago with 480km, also seemed to run fine.
                        Cheers

I'm a bit surprised that there's no reports of head gasket failures considering the alloy heads on cast iron blocks, maybe Toyota got it right with this engine.

Ever had a Jackaroo T/D engine in your shop, or do you just throw them away.......

I myself am not a reconditioner but supply parts to the reconditioners but yes the old 2.8 td I would sell about 5 kits a week and the Chinese have caught on by replicating this engine complete with turbo and fuel -- a bit of a worry

Old topic but my work car is a 97 RV6 3.4 and it has 491000 on it and going strong. The company I work for bought it new in 97, I took it over when I started in 2001, it had 120000 on it then. Only replaced the suspension, battery multiple times and the alternator. I regularly do long trips for work across NSW and heavy off road work.
The air temp regulator dial is a bit screwed, only moves 1/3 of the range, feels like a spring is in wrong. I got Toyota to do a full safety, system and "everything" check at the 485000 service and all they picked up is the dial as stated and the rear brakes need doing next service. Work is going to retire the car this year and I have offered to buy it as the mechnical side of it still seams very strong. Hopefully work will agree to my price of $3000.
