  • Fuel Consumption - Simpson Desert Trip

Can anyone tell me accurately fuel consumption in litres per 100km from Dalhousie to Birdsville for a 90 series 3.4L V6 fully loaded with roof rack etc?

G'day Bushtreka. I used an average of 20L per 100k. I was heavily loaded and running 33's.
Dad's diesel 80 series used less than 10 Should have made him carry the firewood!
    Cheers, Ben.

      Hi Bushtreka,
      When I had my 90 series V6:

Mt. Dare to Birdsville I used 130L of petrol, I didn't need to use any jerry cans but take them in case (someone else in a Nissan needed it !). It worked out just under 21L/100KM. The car was fully loaded, ARB steel bullbar/roof racks. I'd say 20-21L/100KM is very accurate for normal driving style in the desert.

      cheers
      Rob

        Thanks Ben and Rob,

I got 24L/100km around Coffin Bay mostly in low range though, including down the beach (soft sand), with full tanks and 70L of water and a full load. I am thinking between 20 and 25L/100KM for Simpson should cover it but I will take a Jerry or two for the Nissan! I take it that you can stay in hi range some of the time and that this helps?

Yep. High range should be fine for at least 80% of that run - weather dependent of course. Was bone dry when we went last year.
          Cheers, Ben.

When I did it in 2003 via the Rig Road going east to west, I used 3/4 of each tank for the 779 km. I did not fill up there, only adding 60 litres plus 22 litres in a jerry can. I was heavily loaded, but no roof racks. I did 100% in high range.

Well as we can see, it will all depend on your vehicle, there is no real answer to your question. You will have to play safe with fuel and either put a larger fuel tank in or buy some jerry cans and carry them.

                Bushtreka,
I went across in our 97 RV6 in May last year, fully loaded, 5 people, FULL roof rack and 100 litres water. Used 132.4 litres @ 225 cpl at Mt dare. Works out to 25.4 lt/100.
95% of it was high range, only a couple of spots we used low range. Obviously we went East-West, but I reckon this was easier. You will shake your head at how many people run their tyre pressure too high across there!
