Replace Air Conditioning Compressor or pulley / bearing

I have a 97 Grande 3.4L and there is a bit of noise coming out of the compressor area and a bit of a wobble. The local auto sparky who I dont know from a bar of soap reckons the whole compressor needs replacing but I am not too keen to part with a $1000 just yet.

Has anyone experienced this?

I had this experience on a toyota Seca, dealer wanted to charge $1200 for a second hand one. I chose to passed on this. When I got home I had a look and the pulley was keyed onto the compressor shaft and the shaft was threaded also. The key was worn a little so I bought a $2 nyloc nut and fitted that. Eventually sold the car like that 7 years later without touching it again.

I did phone the dealer and ask why they were asking such a huge price for the replacement part when all was required was a nut. He said it had to do with any warranty associated with work completed.

I suppose he was just covering his arse.

I ended up replacing the compressor. The shaft of the compressor was flogged out. It ended up costing $1050.00.

Holy c#&p, that'a a lot of dough mate for a pump. Was that a genuine pump and Toyota install?
